W&L Football Rushes to a 42-28 Win Over Randolph-Macon

More news about: Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. – Aside from the end of the first half, Washington and Lee scored on its first six possessions in posting a 42-28 victory over 20th-ranked and previously unbeaten Randolph-Macon in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (4-2, 3-0) rushed for better than 400 yards for the fourth time in six games, totaling 427 on the ground and 495 yards total.

Randolph-Macon (6-1, 2-1) opened the game with a 12-play drive covering 80 yards to assume a 7-0 lead on a 4-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Drake Sanders (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) at the 9:14 mark.  However, W&L responded by scoring just one minute later on a 38-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) and took a 14-7 lead on a 13-yard Heinsohn touchdown run with 38 seconds left in the opening quarter.  Junior running back Harrison Hudson (Salem, Va./Salem) then gave W&L a 21-7 advantage on a 9-yard touchdown run with 9:46 left in the half.

Sanders made it 21-14 when he scored on a 1-yard run with 4:31 left in the half, but the Generals marched down the field and posted a 28-14 lead on an 8-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Charlie Westfal (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) with 1:12 left in the half.  R-MC drove to the W&L 13 in the final minute, but sophomore quarterback Luke Sellers' (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) pass was intercepted in the end zone by sophomore defensive back Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) with 33 seconds remaining.  Westfal then took a knee to send the teams into the halftime break.

Washington and Lee opened the second half with another scoring drive as Hudson capped a 6-play, 60-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown reception from Westfal for a 35-14 lead just 2:48 into the third quarter.  Sellers rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the second half for the Yellow Jackets, but sophomore running back Brett Murray (Lookout Mountain, Tenn./Baylor School) scored on a 42-yard touchdown run for W&L as the Generals defeated Randolph-Macon in Lexington for the sixth-straight time.

Heinsohn paced the W&L offensive onslaught with 147 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.  Murray totaled 100 yards and one touchdown on just 10 carries, while Westfal rushed for 97 yards and a score on 18 attempts.  He also completed 3-of-5 passes for 67 yards and one touchdown.  Hudson carried eight times for 48 yards and one score and caught three passes for 67 yards and another touchdown.

The Generals' defense forced four more turnovers in the win and were led by Pelton's 11 tackles and one interception.  Sophomore linebacker Jesse Jenkins (Roanoke, Va./William Flemming) added nine stops.

Sanders led the Yellow Jackets with 186 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries.  Sellers rushed six times for 42 yards and two touchdowns, and completed 6-of-19 passes for 128 yards but was intercepted three times.  Senior wide receiver Earl Peoples (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) snared four passes for 96 yards, while first-year defensive back Andrew Leonard (Herndon, Va./Oakton) recorded a team-high 11 tackles.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater for a 1:00 pm contest.
