WATERVILLE, Maine --- Shea Dwyer (Marlborough, Conn.) broke the Wesleyan University single-game rushing record for the second week in a row after finishing with 255 yards on 31 carries in the Cardinals' 27-20 win over Colby College on Saturday at Seaverns Field at Harold Alfond Stadium.

Dwyer had 213 yards to break the Wesleyan record a week ago in a 35-21 home victory over Hamilton College. He had five touchdowns in that game and added three more scores against the Mules (1-2).

Colby took a 6-0 lead after the first quarter when quarterback Nick Kmetz (Laurel, Del.) hit Patrick Burns (Charles Town, W.V.) on a 25-yard scoring pass. The Mules missed on the extra point attempt.

Dwyer took over the game in the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns. He scampered in from 10 yards out on the first play of the second quarter to give his team a 7-6 margin. The Cardinals took over on Colby's 47-yard line and watched Dwyer rush for 5 and 32 yards before his scoring run.

Colby punter Connor Sullivan (Hamilton, Mass.) had a nice 34-yard punt downed at Wesleyan's 11-yard line with 12:01 to play until halftime. However, Dwyer ran 89 yards on the first play of the drive to put the Cardinals up 14-6.

The Cardinals made it a 21-6 halftime lead by using 13 plays on an 88-yard drive. Wesleyan quarterback Matt Coyne (Bristol, Conn.) hit tight end Tim Morley (Costa Mesa, Calif.) on a 2-yard scoring pass.

The Mules scored the only points of the third quarter after taking over on the Wesleyan 32-yard line with 2:29 to play. Kmetz found Connor Walsh (Westwood, Mass.) on an 8-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 27-13.

The Cardinals (2-1), though, drove 50 yards on seven plays early in the fourth quarter for a big insurance touchdown. Dwyer had his shortest touchdown run of the day at 3 yards.

The Mules put the pressure back on Wesleyan with another score from Kmetz to Walsh on a 5-yard pass play. Colby drove 72 yards in 16 plays, but took nearly five minutes off the clock.

Wesleyan recovered an on-sides kick with 4:27 to play and ate up the rest of the clock to pull out the win.

The Cardinals' defense held Colby to 39 yards of total rushing. Kmetz finished with 290 yards passing and the three touchdown passes. Walsh caught 11 balls for 88 yards and the two scores, while Burns had 96 yards of receiving on six grabs.

Cameron Davila (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Cyprian Oyomba (Norwalk, Conn.) each had eight tackles for Wesleyan.

Tom Duffy (Plymouth, Mass.) paced the Mules defense with nine tackles, including three for loss. Derrick Beasley (Andover, Mass.) added eight tackles.
