Dickey’s Four Rushing Touchdowns Lead Maritime To 47-21 Victory Over Husson

More news about: SUNY-Maritime

With Maritime trailing 21-19 in the third quarter, sophomore quarterback Joe Dickey scored three straight rushing touchdowns to propel the Privateers past the visiting Husson Eagles, 47-21, for a Homecoming victory. Dickey ended the afternoon with four touchdowns on 53 rushing yards. Maritime improves to 4-0 on the season, continuing its best start in program history, while opening the ECFC slate 1-0. The Eagles fall to 0-4 (0-1 ECFC).

"This is a very special win for us because, of all our conference opponents, we had never beaten Husson. They are a very good team who has played top opponents in the nation (with combined records of 14-3). It was great to win on Homecoming in front of all our supporting alumni."

The Privateers amassed 511 yards of total offense, while keeping Husson to just 162. Senior Greg McGough led all rushers with 124 yards on the ground, while sophomore Fritz Jean and junior Jamie Spanopoulos also rushed for over 100 yards as Jean had 111 yards and one touchdown and Spanopoulos registered 102 rushing yards. Senior John Gagliano scored the game's first touchdown in the first quarter on a three-yard run.

In the air, Dickey was 1-for-5 for 12 yards, while his backup, freshman Tyler Trodden recorded Maritime's lone passing touchdown when he hooked up with Jean on a 65-yard TD pass.

The Privateers had a 12-0 lead at the end of the first half after rushing touchdowns by Gagliano (3 yards) and Jean (28 yards). The lead was advanced to 19-0 after Dickey ran in a three-yard run, his first TD of the day, at 13:04 of the second. Senior Madison Leary's PAT kick was good.

Husson fought back the rest of the quarter, taking advantage of two Maritime fumbles and turning them into touchdowns. Running back Justin Linde threw a pass complete to Roderic Johnson, who ran the ball in for a 54-yard touchdown. Johnson caught another pass for an 11-yard touchdown pass, this time from quarterback Jack Hersom, with just 53 second remaining in the half.

The Eagles took their first lead of the season when the opening kickoff of the second half was brought back 98 yards for a touchdown and the PAT kick by Ivan Somerville was good, making the score 21-19, Husson.

Dickey then scored the first of his three-straight touchdowns with 1:34 remaining in the third to give the Privateers the lead for good, 27-21.

On defense, sophomore Pat Lasher led the team with 11 total tackles (eight solo and six assisted), including one for a loss of one yard. The Privateers recorded two sacks for combined losses of 11 yards. The sacks by sophomore Thomas Boney and junior Rob Gorgy came on back-to-back plays. Gorgy also blocked a Husson PAT in the victory.
