Catholic 16, Shenandoah 13

More news about: Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. — - Visiting Catholic University continued its run of Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium magic Saturday night in a 16-13 non-league football victory over host Shenandoah.

The Cardinals (1-0) ruined the evening for the capacity crowd by winning for the third straight time at the Hornets (0-1) home facility.

In 2008, CUA converted a fake field goal in overtime to secure the win, but used more conventional means this season.

With the score tied at 13-13 following a Daniel Wright to Rico Wallace touchdown pass for Shenandoah at the 14:01 mark of the third, Catholic got a break that the end of that same period that proved fatal for the Hornets.

Linebacker Christian Pavik forced a Kevin Roberts fumble at the SU 15, and Kevin Ross recovered for the Cards to put them in position for the go-ahead score.

Shenandoah held CUA to just two yards, but Connor Maloney nailed his 29-yard field goal to put Catholic in front for good.

The FG was one of three he had on the evening. He also hit from 22 and 21 yards.

Shenandoah had once last drive in itself, getting to the CUA 30 with 4.9 seconds remaining. Unfortunately for the 2236 fans in attendance, Andrew Lloyd was just short on his 48-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

The two teams were virtually even in yardage, with Catholic gaining 337 yards to the Hornets 336. For the first time in recent memory, the majority of the SU yardage came through the air.

Wright was 17 for 35 for 250 yards and one touchdown in his first career start.

Wallace, a junior, eight catches for 168 yards. He is now the career receptions leader at SU.

The Cardinals, which possessed the ball for 33:16, got 109 yards rushing from Michael Pitzenberger and a 15 of 34 passing performance from Greg Cordivari.
