St. John's wraps regular season by rolling over Crown

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — No. 2 Saint John's scored five touchdowns and a field goal in its first six possessions in route to a 50-0 win over Crown on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Clemens Stadium.

SJU took the opening kickoff and went 52 yards in six plays as senior quarterback Ryan Keating threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Blake Elliott.

On its second possession, junior wide receiver Lee Clintsman caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Keating to make the score 14-0, a little more than five minutes into the game.

Less than three minutes later, Keating and Clintsman connected again, this time on a 33-yard touchdown pass.

On the first play of the second quarter, sophomore full back Jason Good scored from 2 yards out and SJU led 28-0. Good's touchdown capped an 11-play, 79-yard drive.

With 5:59 left in the first half, sophomore running back Aaron Babb scored on a 1-yard run, which ended a 15-play, 77-yard drive. The extra point failed and SJU increased its lead to 34-0.

The Johnnies added its final scoring drive of the first half at 3:35 on a career-long 42-yard field goal by junior kicker Brandon Keller.

SJU's only scoring of the third quarter came at 7:45 when junior tight end Justin Winkels scored on a 13-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Zach Vertin. The scoring drive took 12 plays and ate up 61 yards in 5:35.

SJU's final touchdown of the game came at 12:07 of the fourth quarter when junior running back James Lehner scored on a 28-yard touchdown run.

SJU dominated all aspects of the game, including a 504 to 192 advantage in total offense. The Johnnies had 26 first downs, 260 yards rushing and 244 yards passing.

The Purple Storm had seven first downs, 140 yards passing and 52 yards rushing. Crown had 12 yards total offense at halftime and collected its first first down midway through the third quarter.

Individually, 19 players carried the ball, nine players caught a pass and eight SJU quarterbacks attempted a pass.

Keating was 6-for-8 passing for 111 yards and three touchdowns. Senior backup quarterback R.J. Welsh was 6-for-10 passing for 88 yards. Sophomore Jake Theis had six carries for 60 yards.

Clintsman had four catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns and Elliott had three catches for 36 yards and one touchdown. Elliott extended his NCAA Division III record streak of having a catch in 43 consecutive games. Elliott also went over the 1,000-yard mark in receiving yards this season and became the first SJU receiver in school history to have three 1,000-yard receiving seasons in a career.

On the defensive side, 36 players collected at least one tackle in the game. Junior Michael Klobes and sophomore linebacker Danno Wagner each had five tackles for SJU. Wagner also had an interception.

Individually for Crown, senior running back J.T. Trotter carried the ball 23 times for 42 yards. Trotter also had 151 yards on seven kickoff returns.

Sophomore quarterback Andrew Miller was 9-for-24 passing for 139 yards and one interception, while junior wide receiver John Frankosky caught three passes for 73 yards.

SJU finishes the regular season 10-0, while Crown ends the season with a 4-7 overall record. The Johnnies finished the regular season with a perfect record for the eighth time under John Gagliardi.

SJU has now won 19 consecutive games played at Clemens Stadium. In its last 96 games at Clemens Stadium, dating back to 1987, SJU has a record of 86-9-1.

SJU head coach John Gagliardi, in his 55th season and his 51st in Collegeville, extended his all-time record of 410 career wins.

SJU will start preparing for its 15th overall and ninth NCAA playoff appearance in the last 11 years.
