Stagg Bowl XVIII
Allegheny 21, Lycoming 14 (OT)
Dec. 8, Bradenton, Fla.

Allegheny's football team capped an extraordinary season by claiming the NCAA Division III championship with a 21-14 victory against Lycoming in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. The Gators finished 13-0-1 under first-year head coach Ken O'Keefe.

It remains the only Stagg Bowl to be decided in overtime.

Lycoming took a 14-0 lead before momentum swung back in the other direction. The Gators went on a 16-play drive, capped by an 11-yard option run by quarterback Jeff Filkovski, and Filkovski hit Julio Lacayo with a 7-yard pass with 1:38 to go to tie the game, capping a 12-play, 73-yard drive.

The Warriors had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a 41-yard field goal attempt by John Phillips fell short.

Kurt Reiser caught a touchdown pass from Filkovski in overtime after the Gators went the required 25 yards in just three plays. Ed Dougherty opened the Warriors' overtime possession with a pass completion, but linebacker Darren Hadlock sacked him on second down. Defensive lineman Jeff Pearson batted down his third-down pass and Tony Bifulco sealed the game with an interception, beating Dave Bodmer to the ball. Filkovski finished 15-for-26 passing for 115 yards through the air, while rushing for 64 yards on 22 carries.
