In just the second season of the program, West Georgia ran the table and won the Division III football national championship. The school dropped football in 1958 before resuming it in 1981.
West Georgia’s defense sacked Augustana quarterback Lance Hofer eight times and held the Vikings' Wing-T offense, which had averaged nearly 300 yards a game rushing, to 91 yards.
