Chuck Goldstein, the most accomplished head coach of the Gallaudet football program, is stepping down to take a position in the admissions office. The move was announced by GU athletics director Warren Keller on Tuesday. Goldstein's final day in athletics will be March 30 before starting his new role as admissions program manager.

Goldstein was the 36th head coach of the storied Gallaudet football program that originated in 1883 and is Home Of The Huddle™ which started in 1894. Goldstein served as Gallaudet head coach from 2010-24 with no 2020 season due to COVID-19. He served as an assistant coach with the Bison in 2009 where he was the offensive coordinator. Goldstein has served as the assistant athletic director for compliance since 2016.

"It has been an honor to lead the Gallaudet football program for the past 14 years. I am grateful for the players, coaches, administrators, and supporters who have made this journey so special. Together, we have achieved so much and created memories that will last a lifetime," said Goldstein. "While it's difficult to step away, I'm excited for this new opportunity in the admissions office and to continue serving Gallaudet University in a different capacity. Thank you for the memories, the support, and the opportunity to be part of something truly special."

Goldstein compiled a 55-72 record during his tenure, 42-44 in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. The Bison join the Old Dominion Athletic Conference this fall.

"Coaching is about more than just the game – it's about developing young people. Coach Goldstein has dedicated countless hours to the Bison football program and the GU athletics program over the years and we are thankful for his commitment and dedication," said Keller. "Coach Goldstein made history at Gallaudet by leading the Bison to ECFC championships, NCAA tournament appearances, hundreds of awards and national media recognition. Thank you, Coach Goldstein, for leaving the football program in great shape for the next coach. We wish you the best in the new phase of your life and professional career."

Goldstein led the Bison football team to new heights during his 14 years at the helm and 15 total with the program. Goldstein set program records for wins (55), conference wins (42), win streak (11) and tied the program record of nine wins in a season. The Bison football team became the first Gallaudet men's team sport to make a NCAA tournament appearance in 2013 and a second one in 2022. GU won two Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) championships (2013, '22) and one co-championship (2023).

In Goldstein's 14 seasons as head coach, the Bison were honored for their success on and off the gridiron. Gallaudet earned 153 All-ECFC honors, 105 ECFC All-Academic selections and had 105 players earn ECFC Academic Honor Roll status. GU earned many ECFC major awards including five ECFC Rookies of the Year, four ECFC Defensive Players of the Year, two ECFC Special Teams Players of the Year, two ECFC Assistant Coaches of the Year and one ECFC Offensive Lineman of the Year.

GU football student-athletes received national and regional recognition during the Goldstein era. Two Bison earned D3football.com All-America honors in 2012 (Tony Tatum) and 2013 (Adham Talaat). D3football.com selected 17 Bison to its All-Region teams and 16 Bison student athletes were picked to the D3football.com National Team of the Week. GU earned 15 All-ECAC honors and in 2013 GU had its first Gagliardi Trophy finalist in Talaat.

Goldstein earned two ECFC Coach of the Year awards in 2013 and 2022. During the 2022 season, Goldstein received the high honor of D3football.com Region 1 Coach of the Year. Goldstein was also active with the American Football Coaches Association as he served as a featured speaker during the 2014 AFCA Coaches Convention.

In the classroom, GU football earned 27 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors where three times the Bison earned CSC Academic All-America® distinction. Gallaudet has placed 27 student athletes on the National Football Foundation (NFF) Honor Society and 13 years the Bison had a William V. Campbell Trophy Semifinalists.

Goldstein was a key cornerstone of building Gallaudet's athletic national recognition through hundreds of media interviews that included many national outlets including ESPN, ABC News, CBS News, USA Today, Washington Post, The Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic and Sports Business Journal to name a few.

In 2023, Gallaudet football and AT&T launched a national commercial and media campaign centered around the AT&T 5G Football Helmet. The helmet allows coaches on the sideline to select a play from a tablet that sends the play to a lens inside the helmet. The quarterback wearing the helmet receives the play in augmented reality on the digital display located within the visor. This new technology, which took more than two years to develop and test, debuted on Oct. 7, 2023, and brought unprecedented media coverage to Gallaudet and the Deaf Community.

A national search for the new GU football head coach will begin immediately with the goal to have someone in place in the coming months.
