WPI assistant to get head coaching job

More news about: Fitchburg State | WPI

Scott Sperone has been appointed as Fitchburg State's first full-time football head coach.

Sperone comes to Fitchburg State after serving as the defensive coordinator at WPI for the past three seasons. During his tenure in Worcester, Sperone was responsible for recruiting, travel accommodations as well as serving as the liaison with the athletic trainers. He also taught physical education classes for the Engineers.

He replaces Jim McGuire, who led the Falcons to a 4-16 record in two seasons at the helm.

“We are excited to bring Coach Sperone to the Fitchburg State University community and Falcon family,” said athletic director Matthew Burke. “He is an accomplished and talented football coach and has had proven success on and off the field. Coach Sperone brings an in-depth understanding of what it takes to build and sustain a winning culture. I have confidence in his abilities and vision for the program.”

In addition, Scott also handled event management at WPI during the football offseason.

Prior to WPI, Sperone was the defensive coordinator at FDU-Florham from 2011-2017. Scott began his coaching career as a volunteer student coach at Springfield in 2000 before taking over as the outside linebackers coach as King’s (2001-02).

He then took over as a graduate assistant at Springfield for two seasons, from 2002-04 until being named the defensive backs coach at Stonehill (2004-05). Following a stint as wide receivers coach at Williams from 2005-06, Scott also coached running backs at Brown from 2006-08 and was the defensive coordinator at Merrimack (2008-11).

“I’d like to sincerely thank Dr. Lapidus, Dr. Bayless and Mr. Burke for extending me the opportunity to become the athletics recruiting coordinator and head football coach at Fitchburg State University. I’m thrilled to become the new head coach at FSU. After meeting with the athletics staff I knew that Fitchburg was where I wanted to be,” said Sperone.

“I’m eager to officially step into my role and recruit for our incoming class. I’m excited to work with our student-athletes this spring, both on and off the field. I believe that a team working towards a unified goal can achieve great things and I’m looking forward to getting the Falcons ready to fly for the 2020 season.”

Scott graduated from Springfield in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in movement of sports studies, while also holding a master's from Springfield (2004) in physical education with a concentration in athletic administration.
