Mount Union fumbled three times, two of which No. 19 Franklin turned into second-half touchdowns, and the Purple Raiders trailed in the fourth quarter in the regular season for the first time in a while. But the No. 1 Purple Raiders answered with a quick scoring drive, going 79 yards in under three minutes to take the 30-27 and held on to win by the same score.

Jake Kumerow caught a 30-yard touchdown pass and Dennis Moore added a 28-yard run for a score in the fourth quarter as No. 9 UW-Whitewater scored all 17 of its points in the final 10 minutes to rally past Washington University 17-7. Moore led all rushers with 72 yards on 13 carries.

Christopher Newport held the vaunted option attack of Salisbury to 111 yards on 40 carries and Paul Dukes found the end zone on an 18-yard toss from Marcus Morrast with 15 seconds left as the Captains knocked off the No. 16 Sea Gulls 17-10.

No. 12 UW-Oshkosh rallied with 24 unanswered points in the second half to win at Central 24-17, including a long pass play from Nick Olla for a touchdown.

New starting quarterback Jake Sims got the season off to a good start for No. 3 Mary Hardin-Baylor, completing 18 of 26 passes for 209 yards and rushing for only 33 in the Cru's 31-13 win at Redlands. Before now, if an UMHB quarterback only ran for 33 yards, you could assume the Cru would be in huge trouble.

No. 2 St. Thomas rolled over UW-Eau Claire as 100 players got into the game in sweltering heat in a 52-7 win by the Tommies. Seventh-ranked Hobart had little trouble with the trip to Dickinson, beating the Red Devils 30-7 behind 203 rushing yards from Steven Webb. No. 11 UW-PlattevilleNo. 14 Heidelberg, No. 17 Johns Hopkins and No. 24 St. John Fisher all rolled in their openers as well.

No. 21 Coe hung on in its opener, defeating Monmouth 23-22 thanks in large part to a missed PAT by the Scots with 7:10 left in the game. Monmouth got back into Coe territory but an interception allowed the Kohawks to run out the clock.
