1999 Around the Mid-Atlantic columns

December 24, 1999 Five rounds, five journeys My playoff odyssey might not have been as interesting or nearly as long as Pacific Lutheran’s, but I can at least claim credit for about 4,500 miles traveled this postseason in pursuit of Division III football.

November 12, 1999 Centennial's swim in Pool C The Centennial Conference was probably pretty far from people's minds. After all, the conference never had two teams in the field under the old system and hadn't won an NCAA playoff game since 1985. Nonetheless, Ursinus has a good shot at becoming one of the first Pool C bids in Division III football history.

November 5, 1999 Bidding farewell to Stagg Field Tomorrow Susquehanna closes Amos Alonzo Stagg Field in style. After 101 years, the school will bid farewell to the grounds which Stagg once roamed as well as break ground for the new Nicholas A. Lopardo Stadium. The playing surface itself will be rotated, occupying part of the same area, and will retain the name Stagg Field.

October 29, 1999 Bridgewater revival continues The Eagles were pretty much off the map in terms of ODAC football not so long ago. Coming off an 0-10 season, Bridgewater was picked last in the seven-team conference.

October 22, 1999 Randolph-Macon stays in race Despite a 64-29 deficit in fourth quarters this season, Randolph-Macon managed to hold on to beat Emory & Henry 36-23. This time the Yellow Jackets took a 23-0 lead into the final quarter but needed a late 69-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior linebacker D'Andre Murray to clinch it.

October 13, 1999 Catholic lands first blow Two-and-a-half quarters into Catholic's game with Randolph-Macon, things looked grim. Catholic fans had to be cringing as Randolph-Macon took a 26-7 lead.

October 6, 1999 Who's in, who's out? Five weeks into the season is enough time to take a look around the conferences and talk about postseason hopes. Sure, conference schedules are just getting underway in most of the Mid-Atlantic region conferences, but we can look ahead to the big games that will decide the three AQs the NCAA will be giving out.

September 21, 1999 Macon's up-and-down day Within the span of a few minutes in Saturday's Washington and Jefferson/Randolph-Macon game the Yellow Jackets went from also-rans to contenders. Unfortunately, they followed that with a U-turn.

September 14, 1999 W&J a sleeper no longer Of the many surprises in the Mid-Atlantic region the first two weeks, none might be as unexpected as the resurgence of Washington and Jefferson.

September 4, 1999 Catholic, JCU have ways to go WASHINGTON — If key interregional matchups will determine the runner-up bids in this year's expanded 28-team tournament, then today's Catholic-John Carroll game will have big implications.

August 29, 1999 ACFC alignment might be short-lived It's probably not surprising that the Atlantic Central Football Conference, which will crown its first champion this season, didn't receive an automatic qualifier (AQ) to the playoffs. What might surprise you is that if the NCAA doesn't reverse its policy, the ACFC will never get one.

July 20, 1999 E&H looks to end dry spell A new era is dawning for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, hopefully. The seven-year host of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl has never placed a team in the national title game. The ODAC has had only two postseason appearances in the 90s.
