Michael Hnatkowsky and Luke Schuermann lead the D3football.com 2021 All-Region 2 team. Hnatkowsky was named Region 2 Offensive Player of the Year, while Schuermann was named the Region 2 Defensive Player of the Year.
Rensselaer coach Ralph Isernia, who led RPI to the national quarterfinals, is the Region 2 Coach of the Year. It’s his second selection as a D3football.com regional Coach of the Year, after having been named East Region Coach of the Year in 2018.
NCAA Division III realigned Division III football into six regions in 2021. Region 2 includes the Centennial Conference, Empire 8, Liberty League, New Jersey Athletic Conference and Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
Hnatkowsky, a senior from Philadelphia, threw for 3,876 yards in 13 games for Muhlenberg, completing 68.9 percent of his passes and throwing 47 touchdowns, with 11 interceptions. He also ran for three touchdowns in leading the Mules to the national quarterfinals, where they lost in overtime at Mount Union.
Schuermann, a sophomore from St. Louis, recorded 46 total tackles, 30 solo, with 20.5 tackles for loss, including 11 sacks, from his defensive end spot for Johns Hopkins. He also forced two fumbles. Schuermann is listed as a sophomore but is in his first year of college football.
The teams, selected in balloting by Region 2 sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 206 nominations by full Division III member schools. A total of 77 players were chosen for 79 spots. Players nominated for All-Region are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced the evening of Dec. 17, in D3football.com’s pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl XLVIII.
