By Steve Woltmann; Dan Poel, Ohiosi.com

Mount Union cornerback Louis Berry and North Central (Ill.) quarterback Broc Rutter lead the D3football.com 2018 All-North Region team. Rutter was named North Region Offensive Player of the Year, while Berry was named the North Region Defensive Player of the Year.

Washington University in St. Louis coach Larry Kindbom, who led the Bears to an 8-2 record in the program’s first season in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, is the North Region Coach of the Year. Kindbom’s team improved by five and a half games over 2017, a season spent as an independent. He has won 213 games as a Division III football head coach.

Berry, a senior from Pittsburgh, has scored six touchdowns from his cornerback spot this season for the Purple Raiders, who are 13-0 and playing in the Division III football national semifinals. He has intercepted five passes, has 10 pass breakups, two blocked kicks and two forced fumbles. In addition, he has 32 tackles (25 of them solo), five tackles for loss and four sacks.

Rutter, a junior from Naperville, Illinois, led the Cardinals to a 10-2 record and the second round of the NCAA Division III football playoffs, throwing 30 touchdown passes and just three interceptions. He completed 69.9 percent of his passes, averaging 294.9 yards per game, while also rushing for four touchdowns.

The teams, selected in balloting by North Region sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 212 nominations by Division III member schools. A total of 76 players were chosen. Players nominated for All-Region are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced the evening of Dec. 14, in D3football.com’s pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl XLVI.
