D3football.com 2016 All-South Region Team

By Andrew Zavoina for d3photography.com

Teidrick Smith and Blake Jackson lead the D3football.com 2016 All-South Region team. Smith was named South Region Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row, while Jackson was named the South Region Offensive Player of the Year.

Mary Hardin-Baylor made it a clean sweep of the South Region awards as Pete Fredenburg was named South Region Coach of the Year. Fredenburg was also named regional coach of the year in 2013.

Smith, a senior from Hallettsville, Texas, helped lead the Crusaders to the Division III national semifinals with 22 tackles for loss, 14 of them sacks, through 13 games. His 22 tackles for loss accounted for minus-128 yards. Smith also broke up three passes and forced a fumble while compiling 52 tackles, 29 of them solo. His selection marks the seventh time a player from UMHB has been named South Region Defensive Player of the Year in the 12-year history of the award.

Jackson, a senior from Houston, Texas, has thrown for 2,952 yards and 34 touchdowns, while running for another 708 yards and nine scores for the Crusaders. Jackson has completed 66.2 percent of his passes, throwing just seven interceptions in 13 games.

The teams, selected in balloting by South Region sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 229 nominations by Division III member schools. A total of 77 players were chosen. Players nominated for All-Region are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced the evening of Dec. 16, in D3football.com’s pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl XLIV.
