Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer have stadiums just a couple of blocks apart in Southern California, and these rivals that share more than just a street face off on Saturday for a trip to playoffs. Greg Thomas has more in Around the Nation.
The 60th edition of the Sixth Street Rivalry was a thrilling one on Saturday afternoon. The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens converted a walk-off two-point attempt in overtime to win the game 29-28 over the Stags. The Stags took their first lead of the day when Chris Czielsa (CMC) hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass on just the second play of overtime. Needing a touchdown to continue the game, Pomona-Pitzer faced a fourth and seven from the 22-yard line. Karter Odermann escaped pressure and heaved a pass to the end zone. The pass bounced off the helmet of a Stag defender and into the waiting arms of Kevin Masini for the score.
Three different Stags scored touchdowns on Saturday afternoon, but the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team was not able to hold on against the Redlands Bulldogs, falling 42-25. The Stags held a 17-12 lead at the half and the game was tied 25-25 at the end of the third quarter, but the Bulldogs scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to claim the victory.
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team continued their strong start to SCIAC play by shutting out the Occidental Tigers 37-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Stags overwhelmed the Tigers on both sides of the ball, collecting 459 yards on offense and limiting the Tigers to just 113 yards. The CMS defense allowed Occidental to gain just six first downs and collected a half dozen sacks in the contest.
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team hosted the Washington and Lee Generals. The Generals used a methodical ground attack to build a 24-0 lead before the Stags battled back to score the next 14 points. The second-half comeback was not enough as the Generals held on for the 24-14 victory.
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team opened the 2017 season with a 37-16 victory over the Lewis and Clark Pioneers on Saturday afternoon. The Stags’ defense held the Pioneers to just two points for the first 55 minutes before Lewis and Clark pushed two late touchdowns through.
In the final game of the 2016 season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team beat cross-campus rivals Pomona-Pitzer 23-21. This win marks the fourth over the Sagehens for the CMS graduating class of 2017.
Freshman Garrett Cheadle (CMC) ran the game of his life, rushing for five touchdowns to help Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (4-0, 2-0) defeat Occidental College (0-4, 0-2) in a massive 45-28 victory. This is the Stags' first 4-0 start since 2010. Cheadle broke out for 214 yards in 32 rushing attempts while freshman Christian Curcio (CMC) ran for 172 yards in 21 attempts and a touchdown.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was winless just four years ago, but with new blood on the field and on the sidelines, the Stags are no hoping to no longer stay home from the big dance.
The 2016 season for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team officially begins on Sept. 10 with the team's season and home-opener against Lewis & Clark (Ore.). Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Zinda Field.

Senior linebacker and special teams leader Nick Nasse (CMC) of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team has been selected to the 2014 D3football.com All-West Region second team as a special teams player, D3football.com announced on Dec. 8.
Of the eight selections the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team had on the 2014 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) All-Conference teams, six were either on defense or special teams. Much improved play on defense and special teams in 2014 played a large role in CMS' overall improvement in the win-loss column.
In the final home game of the 2014 season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team set the CMS record for fewest total yards allowed and scored five touchdowns for a 40-3 win over Whittier. The Stags are now 4-4 overall and 3-3 in conference with just one game against Pomona-Pitzer (1-7, 1-5 SCIAC) remaining on the schedule.

The calendar recently switched to October and with that, the transition from the non-conference to conference season for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team. Despite holding a brief first quarter lead, CMS dropped its conference-opener 33-23 to Chapman on Oct. 4 at Zinda Field.
Senior linebacker Max Winsberg of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team has been selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week for games between Sept. 11-13. Winsberg had a career-high two interceptions to go along with eight tackles in CMS’ 36-14 win over Lewis & Clark on Sept. 13.
