Two Late Interceptions Seal Susquehanna Victory

More news about: Susquehanna

Jason Brougham and Connor Thompson each intercepted passes in the fourth quarter for the Susquehanna University Football team as the River Hawks came from behind to post a 14-11 victory over Muhlenberg Saturday afternoon on Frank Marino Field at Scotty Wood Stadium in Allentown.

Susquehanna (2-1 Overall, 1-1 Centennial) fell behind in the second quarter when Muhlenberg (2-1, 1-1) got on the board with a 26-yard field goal after a 13-play drive.

Later in the second quarter, Thompson recovered a fumble on a Muhlenberg punt return setting up the first scoring drive for the River Hawks.

Nick Crusco capped a short drive with a five-yard rush after a pass interference penalty set up a first-and-goal. The extra point kick failed and Susquehanna took a 6-3 lead as the first half ended.

Midway through the third quarter, Muhlenberg regained the lead with a 15-yard pass and the successful two-point conversion made it an 11-6 lead for the Mules.

Muhlenberg missed a 33-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth quarter and Crusco immediately engineered a four play scoring drive that featured a pair of 30-plus yard pass completions to Mikah Christian including a 31-yarder into the end zone.

The two-point conversion was good as Mitch Carsley completed a pass to Crusco giving Susquehanna 1 14-11 lead.

Brougham intercepted a pass on the next Muhlenberg drive to stop one drive and Thompson stopped a final drive with his interception with 1:44 left to play.

Susquehanna kneeled down three times to end the game.

Crusco finished 13-for-25 for 145 yards and Christian had five catches for 70 yards. David Simpson and Thompson each had 10 tackles as Thompson, Caleb Cash and Tucker Garner each recorded sacks. The River Hawks finished the day with four interceptions as Danial Shelton and Craig Roumes each added interceptions.

Susquehanna returns home Sept. 23 against Franklin & Marshall on Amos Alonzo Stagg Field in Selinsgrove.
