Games of Sept. 14-16, 2023

The Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware, is D3football.com's weekly honor roll, in its 25th season of recognizing the top performance at each position from the previous week. Players are nominated by schools.

Offense

QB Alex Price, Sr., Trine

Price completed 21 of 30 passes for 439 yards and seven touchdowns in a 58-43 win against Franklin. The performance set school records for passing yards and passing touchdowns in a game, while Price surpassed 6,000 passing yards for his career.

OL Brian White, Eli Sergott, Max Schoening, John Schirger, JoJo Nathaniel, UW-Oshkosh

The Titans' offensive line had a huge performance in a 60-7 win against East Texas Baptist. They helped the team rush for a season-high 212 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Kobe Berghammer threw for 216 yards and five touchdowns and was not sacked. The offense averaged 6.2 yards per play and converted 10 of 17 third down chances.

RB Ale Wilson, Jr., Buffalo State

Wilson accounted for more than 200 yards on offense and three touchdowns for the Bengals in a 41-7 victory over Dean. He rushed for 199 yards on 22 carries (9.0 yards per attempt) and three rushing scores, and also added a reception for 4 yards. In the first quarter, Wilson scampered for 45 yards, setting up the first Bengals' touchdown. He followed it up with touchdown runs of 36 yards and four yards in the second quarter, then highlighted his incredible performance with a career-long 55-yard touchdown run less than one minute into the third quarter.

RB Jay White, Jr., Delaware Valley

White reached career highs in rushing yards, total offense, and touchdowns as he propelled the Aggies to a 29-6 win at Eastern. White hauled in a 56-yard touchdown pass and ran in three more as he scored all four of Del Val's touchdown in the win.

WR JJ Laap, Sr., Cortland

Laap caught five passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns in Cortland's 38-35 loss to 22nd-ranked Susquehanna. He caught an 80-yard TD pass on Cortland's first play from scrimmage as well as an 89-yard scoring catch in the second quarter. His 250 receiving yards are the third-highest single-game total in school history as he now holds the first and third spots on that list.

WR Jake Breitbach, Sr., Gustavus Adolphus

Breitbach led the Gustie offense against UW-Stout with his second consecutive 200-yard receiving game. He finished with 224 receiving yards. Breitbach scored the Gusties' only touchdown on the day - a 47-yard reception to cap a 6-play, 79-yard drive. Breitbach's 15 receptions on Saturday were one short of the program mark for receptions in a game, and he now owns two of the top five receiving games in Gustavus program history.

TE Zach Cernuto, Jr., Washington & Jefferson

Cernuto sparked the Presidents in a 48-3 rout of Westminster (Pa.). Cernuto accounted for the first three touchdowns of the game for W&J. Cernuto rushed for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns and also hauled in a 5-yard touchdown reception during the first half of W&J's victory over the rival Titans.

Defense

DE Alex Bendler, Sr., Lake Forest

Bendler led the Forester defense with two sacks and seven overall tackles including another tackle for loss. The Foresters held Cornell to 0.5 yards per carry on 26 carries and 127 total yards of offense as the team improved to 3-0 on the season.

DT Preston Turner, Sr., Bridgewater

Turner had three tackles for loss, two and a half of them sacks, in Bridgewater's win against N.C. Wesleyan. He finished with five tackles, three solo. In addition, the 300-pounder took a fake punt snap and ran 71 yards for a touchdown after calling an audible when the Eagles were lined up to punt from their own 29.

Sellers had the game-winning tackle for CUW as Lakeland faced fourth-and-2 from the Concordia 7 with under 30 seconds left in the game on Saturday. He finished with seven tackles, all solo, including two tackles for loss and a sack.

DE Nico Golla, Sr., Pacific Lutheran

Golla had three tackles for loss, all of them sacks for the Lutes in a 37-27 win against Cal Lutheran. His three stops behind the line of scrimmage went for minus-13 yards.

LB Matt Scully, Jr., Franklin & Marshall

Scully had a great all-around effort during the Diplomats' 31-25 comeback win in overtime against Montclair State. His day was highlighted by an interception in the end zone during the overtime period. Prior to that, he also forced and recovered a fumble and led the team with nine tackles (including seven solo efforts), as two of his tackles went for a loss.

LB Tucker Buzzell, Sr., Husson

Buzzell put together a dominating defensive performance in the Eagles 31-13 victory over Alfred State on the road. He recorded 13 tackles, eight solo and five assisted while also tallying four tackles for loss. Buzzell's performance went beyond the stat sheet, recording a sack on Alfred State's final drive, which forced a turnover on downs that sealed the game while also recording an early tackle for loss on fourth down and a pass breakup that led to Husson points on the offensive end.

LB Brett Gross, Sr., Ursinus

Gross matched his career-high with 14 tackles (four solo) and posted 1.0 tackles for loss in the Bears' 44-21 win over Rowan. He added to his big night by returning a fumble 39 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

CB Keyshawn Wilder, Sr., Shenandoah

Amburn was the anchor of a Cadet defense which only allowed 14 points for the second straight week. He was tied for the team lead in tackles with seven (five solo), tallied a pass breakup and had a game clinching 36 yard pick six.

S Jack Arnett, Sr., Eureka

Arnett recorded a career-high 13 total tackles, including a career-high 11 solo tackles, had two huge pass breakups and recorded a game-changing interception in the fourth quarter that allowed Eureka to fend off Rockford, 35-28.

CB Donelle Thomas, Sr., Thiel

Special teams

K Tyler Huettel, Sr., Trinity (Texas)

Huettel went 5-for-5 on extra points and hit a career-long 50-yard field goal to help lift No. 6 Trinity to a 38-3 road win over Birmingham-Southern. He is the second person in school history to connect on a 50-yard field goal, and the first Tiger player to do so since the 1974 season.

P Kyle Murray, So., St. Vincent

In St. Vincent's 23-19 win over Allegheny, Murray averaged just 35.0 yards on four punts, but placed three inside the Gators' 10. His biggest kick came with 53 seconds left in the fourth quarter. With SVC clinging to a 4-point lead, Murray sent a 44-yarder that was downed at the Allegheny 4-yard line, effectively sealing the win. Earlier in the game, he also had a 48-yard boot downed at the Allegheny 1.

RET Devin Fridley-Bell, So., Albion

Fridley-Bell returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown in Albion's 48-19 win against Rose-Hulman, as part of a day in which Fridley-Bell averaged 24.6 yards on his seven punt returns.

ST Dominic Winn, So., Susquehanna

Winn recovered two fumbles on special teams, the first on a punt return in the third quarter, which led to a 14-yard Josh Ehrlich rushing touchdown. He also recovered the crucial fumble late in the game on a kick return with the game tied at 35-35, which set up the walkoff field goal by Christian Colasurdo as time expired.
