Four From Hopkins Grab D3football.com All-America Honors

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The Johns Hopkins football team placed four players on the 2023 D3football.com All-America Team it was announced recently.  The four include two second team honorees, one third team pick and one fourth team selection.  The four selections are one shy of the program record of five set in 2022 and mark the fourth time that Johns Hopkins has had three or more players earn D3football.com All-America honors; in addition to the record five selections in 2022, JHU also had three players honored in 2015 and 2021.
 
Johns Hopkins was one of eight teams to place four or more players on the 2023 D3football.com All-America Team.  In addition to Johns Hopkins, Alma, Aurora, Hardin Simmons, Mount Union, North Central, Wartburg and Wisconsin La Crosse also had at least four players selected.
 
The four Blue Jays who were named to the team include graduate student offensive lineman JR Woods (Second Team), senior defensive lineman Luke Schuermann (Second Team), senior tight end Will Leger (Third Team) and sophomore offensive lineman Michael Nwosu (Fourth Team).
 
JR Woods (OL) – Second Team D3football.com All-American
« Earns third straight D3football.com All-America nod with third consecutive second team selection.
« First offensive lineman in school history to earn All-America honors from D3football.com three times.
« Along with Nwosu, marks the second time in school history that two offensive linemen have earned All-America honors in the same season (2013 / Armand Jenifer & Ben Cranston).
« Helped anchor a Blue Jay offensive line that helped pave the way for a unit that averaged 40.9 points and 472.2 yards per game.
« Earned First Team All-Centennial Conference & First Team D3football.com All-Region honors for the third consecutive year this season.
 
Luke Schuermann (DL) - Second Team D3football.com All-American
« Earns third straight D3football.com All-America nod with second consecutive second team selection to go along with a first team nod in 2021.
« First defensive lineman in school history to earn All-America honors from D3football.com three times.
« Has now earned All-America honors a program-record six times in career (D3football.com (3), Associated Press (2), AFCA (1)).
« Finished third on the team – and first among defensive linemen -  in tackles (55) and led the team in sacks (9.5) and tackles for loss (15.5) this season.
« Additional honors this season included being a Campbell Trophy Finalist and a member of the National Football Foundation's Scholar-Athlete Class of 2023.
« Earned First Team All-Centennial Conference & First Team D3football.com All-Region honors for the third consecutive year this season.
 
Will Leger (TE) - Third Team D3football.com All-American
« Becomes the second All-American tight end in program history (Emmett Turner / 4th Team / 2022).
« Finished season with 24 receptions for 419 yards and 12 touchdowns.
« Tied for first on the team in touchdown receptions, tied for third in receptions and ranked third in yards.
« 12 touchdown receptions are a Johns Hopkins single-season record for a tight end and tied for fifth-best overall.
« Also earned First Team All-Centennial and First Team D3football.com All-Region honors this season.
 
Michael Nwosu (OL) - Fourth Team D3football.com All-American
« First sophomore offensive lineman in school history to earn All-America honors.
« The only sophomore among the 20 offensive linemen who earned D3football.com All-America honors – the 19 others were juniors, seniors or graduate students.
« One of just eight sophomores – regardless of position – named to the D3football.com All-America Team.
« Along with Woods, marks the second time in school history that two offensive linemen have earned All-America honors in the same season (2013 / Armand Jenifer & Ben Cranston).
« Helped anchor a Blue Jay offensive line that helped pave the way for  a unit that averaged 40.9 points and 472.2 yards per game.
« Adds All-America nod to previous First Team All-Centennial and First Team D3football.com All-Region selections.
 
Johns Hopkins posted a 12-1 record, won the program's league-record 16th Centennial Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third time in program history in 2023.
