JHU's Schuermann Nabs First Team AFCA All-America Nod

More news about: Johns Hopkins

WACO TX – Johns Hopkins senior defensive end Luke Schuermann has added another honor to his ever-growing resume as he was named an American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) First Team All-American today.  Schuermann is the first Blue Jay since Jack Toner in 2016 to earn a spot on the AFCA All-America Team.  Historically, and including Schuermann's selection this season, Johns Hopkins has had six different players earn a total of eight selections to the AFCA All-America Team.

Schuermann finished third on the team – and first among defensive linemen -  in tackles (55) and led the team in sacks (9.5) and tackles for loss (15.5).  His effort this season boosted his career totals to 171 takcles, 62.5 tackles for loss and 34.5 sacks.  Despite having his freshman season (2020) canceled due to COVID, he ranks as Johns Hopkins' career leader in tackles for loss and sacks.

His selection to the AFCA All-America Team this season marks the fifth time an organization has named Schuermann to its All-America squad; he earned All-America honors from D3football.com and the Associated Press in 2021 and 2022.

A Campbell Trophy Finalist and a member of the National Football Foundation's Scholar-Athlete Class of 2023, Schuermann adds today's selection to his previous First Team All-Centennial Conference and First Team D3football.com All-Region nods this year.

Johns Hopkins has produced at least one All-American (as selected by the AFCA, D3football.com or the Associated Press) in each of the last three years and in nine of the last 11 years.  In all, Johns Hopkins players have been selected as All-Americans 58 times since Jim Kelly (OL) was honored in 1960.

Johns Hopkins posted a 12-1 record, won the program's league-record 16th Centennial Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third time in program history in 2023.
