MILTON, Mass. (10/28/23) – The Nichols College football team was stunned in the final seconds of the Saturday's Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match up against Curry College. The Colonels scored the go-ahead touchdown with nine seconds after cruising down the field 99 yards to cap off the drive. The Bison lost 48-46 on Walter M. Katz Field.

The Bison saw no shortage of offense on their side, totaling 540 total yards of offense on the afternoon. Senior Xavier Powell threw for 336 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 85 yards on the ground and a pair of rushing touchdowns. Classmate Zahir Booker also found the back of the end zone twice on the ground for the Bison.

Both teams traded chances back and forth with the Bison and Colonels, the scoring being 21-18 after two missed extra points and a failed two-point conversion by Curry. The tides of the game shifted in the middle of the second quarter when the Colonels forced a fumbled on a kick-off return and recovered the loose ball.

Curry capitalized on the turnover and grabbed their first led of the day on a nine-yard completion. Montie Quinn then added a his second 40 plus yard rushing touchdown for the Colonel to extend their lead 32-21, and that result held to the end of the half.

In the second half of the game the Bison came out of the gate scoring on their opening drive, capped off by a 19-yard touchdown by junior Jack Morvan. Nichols converted the two-point conversion with a completion to junior Gianluca Gonser, to trail 32-29.

Nichols pulled even at 32-32 thanks to a Vincent Malloz field goal at the 5:01 mark of the third quarter. Curry regained the lead with a field goal of their own. Powell then marched the Bison down the field and capped off the drive with a 10-yard scamper into the end zone to regain the lead 39-35.

Booker found the back of the end zone on the next drive, to extend the Bison lead to 46-35. Curry cut into the lead with 2:07 remaining in the contest, with the Bison leading 46-41. The Colonels stopped the Bison and forced them to punt from the Curry 49-yard line. The Bison pinned the Colonels at their own 1-yard line.

The Bison needed to make a stop to end the game, but the Colonels marched down the field 99-yards and capped off the impressive drive with a touchdown pass with nine seconds remaining the contest to sneak out a win over the Bison, 48-46.

Nichols (3-5, 0-3 CCC) drops their third straight game on the season and will look to get back in the win column, next Saturday as they travel to Springfield, Mass. to face off against Western New England in CCC play. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. from Golden Bear Stadium.
