Blazers Fall in Overtime at Maryville

More news about: Belhaven

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Belhaven Football team dropped their first game of the 2023 season in a 20-7 overtime defeat to Maryville at Lloyd Thornton Stadium on Saturday. The Blazers are now 7-1 (5-1 USAC) with two games left on the schedule.

As the score indicated, it was a defensive stalemate for a majority of the contest. Neither team found the scoreboard in the opening 15 minutes of play. Maryville was able to break through with a three-yard touchdown pass to go up 7-0 with nine minutes to go in the half.

Both defenses continued to set the tone as the hosts led 7-0 heading into the fourth quarter. The Blazers' offense came alive midway through the frame as Kolbe Blunt capped off a long 12-play, 69-yard drive with a four-yard run to even things up with just a minute and a half to play.

After a defensive stop, the Blazers got the ball back with a chance to win but failed on fourth down to send the game into the overtime period.

The Scots got the ball first and converted for six on their opening drive. A fourth-down interception on Belhaven's ensuing possession handed the Green and Gold their first loss of the season.

Tim Johnson finished 13-for-27 for 115 yards and an interception. Kolbe Blunt totaled 42 rushing yards on 14 carries. Through the air, Jacobey James-Grace hauled in three passes for 37 yards.

Despite the loss, the Belhaven defense showed out. They allowed just 3.5 yards per play and six sacks on the day. Josiah Raymond led the Blazers with six total tackles.

Belhaven will look to bounce back next Saturday, November 4th when they travel to Buena Vista, Va. to take on Southern Virginia. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM.
