Hawks Use Big Second Half to Escape Tornados, 31-27

More news about: Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. - In the final home contest of the 2023 campaign, the Brevard College football team (5-4, 5-1 USA South) opened up a 21-0 lead through the first quarter-plus of play in its USA South Conference showdown against Huntingdon College (7-1, 5-1 USAS), but the Hawks stormed back, scoring 31 of the next 37 points, including a 21-3 margin in the second half to take a critical 31-27 victory over the Tornados on Senior Day Saturday at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Brevard used three-consecutive touchdown passes in the first 15-plus minutes of action to take a quick 21-0 advantage. Huntingdon eventually got on the board with a field goal followed by a touchdown before Hugo Taylor nailed a 37-yard field goal to extend the lead to 14 points, 24-10, at the halftime intermission. However, Huntingdon flipped the script completely in the second half, capitalizing on Tornado turnovers while pounding the ball on the ground for three rushing touchdowns, as Brevard was unable to find an answer.

Sophomore quarterback Ethan Beamish paced BC's strong first-half effort, throwing three touchdown passes to break the program single-season touchdown record. Beamish totaled 282 yards through the air on 19 completions, while Zackary Orr led all receivers with 85 yards on three completions and a touchdown. Adam Douglas and Jack Spotz also hauled in touchdowns, as the Tornados used 10 different receivers to catch passes. Chancellor Lee-Parker totaled 64 yards on the ground to lead the rushing attack.

On the defensive side of the ball, graduate linebacker Toby Naylor led the way with seven tackles. Ernest Smith II, a senior defensive lineman from Barnwell, South Carolina, had a strip-sack fumble recovery and graduate defensive back Joc Pledger secured a crucial interception in the second half. Fifth-year senior Wyatt Lankford also recorded a sack on the afternoon.

Despite its passing game being virtually nonexistent throughout the game, Huntingdon relied heavily on its potent ground attack. Kahari McReynolds totaled 166 yards and two rushing touchdowns, while Troy Garner added 42 yards and the other two touchdown scores. Bailey Huston and Hagen Rouse recovered fumbles, Ty Martinez picked Beamish off, and Ty Brown forced a fumble as HC put the pressure on the Tornados in the second half. Korey Anderson and Robert Vickers each logged two sacks each, and the Hawks as a team tallied six sacks.

The Tornados will conclude the 2023 regular season on the road, traveling to Jackson, Mississippi for the first time to take on Belhaven University on Saturday, November 11 at 12 p.m ET / 11 a.m. CT.
