WestConn Football Pulls Away from Massachusetts Maritime With Dominant Defense

More news about: Western Connecticut
DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University defense allowed just 130 total yards, as the Wolves handed the visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers a 28-0 loss in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) football action this evening at Westside Athletic Complex.  WestConn improves to 5-2 with its fourth victory in a row, as the Wolves close the year with a pair of road games in the conference against Worcester State and Fitchburg State coming up on the next two Saturdays.  Massachusetts Maritime falls to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the league.  Raquell Davis (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) enjoyed a stellar final home game on Senior Day, totaling 10 tackles (seven solo) and a sack for the Wolves.

WestConn senior DB Dalton Modehn (Haddam, Conn.) had an interception in the first quarter but neither team came up with any points before the first break.  The Wolves scored the lone points of the first half when junior QB Keion Jones (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) connected on key passes to senior WR Shakespeare Rodriguez (Wallingford Conn.) and RB Chad Blaszky (Selden, N.Y.) for first downs before scoring on a two-yard run with 6:38 left on the clock to cap off the drive.  The Buccaneers pushed into WestConn territory but were pushed back thanks to a tackle-for-loss by senior Troy Pomykala (New Egypt, N.Y.) and Davis' nine-yard sack.  The Wolves made their way into the Massachusetts Maritime red zone, but Stephen McBrine forced a Jones fumble and recovered the ball in the final minute before halftime.

WestConn broke the game open with two quick touchdowns in the third quarter beginning on its first drive when Blasky capped off a 77-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run 3:52 after halftime.  Five plays later, Wolves LB Nosa Uzamere (Hempstead, N.Y.) forced a fumble by Buccaneer QB Marc Murphy that was scooped up by Pomykala and ran in five yards for another WestConn score.  Wolves sophomore DB Milleeq Green (Bridgeport, Conn.) thwarted another Massachusetts Maritime drive later in the third frame with an interception in his own end zone.  In the fourth quarter, WestConn rookie phenom Dae'Shawn Allen (White Plains, N.Y.) added a fourth Wolves touchdown on a 30-yard run to make the final score, 28-0.

Massachusetts Maritime averaged only 1.3 yards per carry and yielded just four complete passes for 74 yards through the air, while WestConn totaled 423 yards of total offense.  Jones completed 18 of 35 passes for 235 yards and rushed six times for 38 more yards, while Blaszky ran 24 times for a game-high 104 yards.  Allen caught five passes and rushed twice for a total of 118 yards, while senior TE Alexandre Gonzalez (Waterbury, Conn.) had three grabs for 49 yards.  Uzamere and Ambrose Richards (Wall, N.J.) made seven tackles apiece for WestConn and Thomas Garland registered eight tackles for the Buccaneers.
