More news about: Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior running back Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC) rushed for season and game-highs of 108 yards and two touchdowns, senior quarterback Andrew Puccinelli (Glen Allen) passed for game-highs of 296 yards and four touchdowns, sophomore wide receiver Mason Cunningham (Arlington) had season and game-highs of 109 yards receiving and two touchdowns, and sophomore wide receiver Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) had a 91-yard kickoff return touchdown to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 48-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football victory past Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The contest was tied at 7-7 after one quarter, before the host Tigers (3-2, 1-1 ODAC) led 21-10 at the half, and 41-10 after three quarters en route to the decisive home win against the visiting Panthers (2-3, 0-2 ODAC). Gonzalez returned the second half kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown to spark the 20-point outburst by the Garnet & Grey in the third quarter.

FC got on the scoreboard first when Braxton Hughes connected with Marquise Woodruff on a 29-yard touchdown pass at 8:28 of the opening quarter. Seth Deaton added the PAT kick for the early 7-0 advantage.

H-SC answered back with a one-yard touchdown run by Frost at 3:48, and sophomore placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) added the first of his six PAT kicks to tie it at 7-7 after 15 minutes. It was an 11-play, 70-yard possession that also included a 39-yard completion from Puccinelli to junior wide receiver Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) and a 13-yard completion to Cunningham.

The Panthers took their last lead at 13-10 following a 31-yard field goal by Deaton at 11:54 of the second quarter.

The Tigers responded with two second-quarter touchdown passes from Puccinelli to Cunningham to take control of the contest … the first on a 38-yard connection at 10:30, and the second on a 24-yard connection at 1:33. The first score capped a quick four-play, 74-yard possession that also witnessed a 19-yard completion from Puccinelli to senior wide receiver Jamahdia Whitby (Williamsburg), along with a 12-yard reception by Cunningham. The second score completed a six-play, 94-yard possession that also featured a 28-yard run by Frost and an 11-yard reception by Cunningham. The two PATs by Swett helped provide for the 21-10 halftime margin.

H-SC wasted no time in the third quarter as Gonzalez fielded the second-half kickoff at his own nine-yard line, bobbled the ball briefly, before scooping it up and running untouched down the center of the field … making a player miss near midfield and outrunning everyone else down the left sideline for the 91-yard kickoff return touchdown at 14:44. The PAT kick was no good, however, and the hosts led 27-10.

The Tigers got the ball right back after senior safety James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) made an interception at his own 38-yard line at 11:33. It was his first interception of the season, and the third of his career. The Garnet & Grey quickly struck again when Puccinelli found senior wide receiver Braeden Bowling (Cary, NC) open in the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown pass at 10:14. Swett's PAT made it 34-10 while capping the four-play, 62-yard possession that included a 20-yard run by Frost.

Following a quick three-and-out by FC that the defense forced, H-SC scored again when Puccinelli connected with Fernandez on a three-yard touchdown pass with 2:21 left in the third quarter. The PAT by Swett pushed the margin to 41-10 after three quarters—the 12-play, 64-yard drive also featured a 14-yard completion from Puccinelli to junior running back JT Diehl (Warrenton) and a nine-yard reception by sophomore running back Markevus Graves-Franklin (Lynchburg).

The Tigers closed out the scoring early in the fourth quarter when Frost scored on another one-yard touchdown run at 13:32. The PAT by Swett provided for the final 48-10 margin that completed a quick five-play, 50-yard possession—aided by a 34-yard completion from Puccinelli to Fernandez.

Frost rushed for his game-high and season-high 108 yards on 19 attempts and two touchdowns for H-SC. Puccinelli passed for his game-high 296 yards (21-25-1) and four touchdowns—tying his career-high—with one interception, the first of the season for him and the team. Cunningham had his game-high and season-high 109 yards receiving on eight receptions and two touchdowns, while Fernandez finished with 84 yards receiving on four receptions and one touchdown, and Bowling had 39 yards receiving on two receptions and one touchdown.

Senior defensive end and team captain Tramell Thompson (Queens, NY) finished with a career-high and game-high 10 tackles, including 0.5 tackles for loss and sacks, to lead the Tigers on defense. Senior All-American safety Will Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) and senior linebacker Dorian Green (Martinsville) each had eight tackles, including three solo by Pickren, along with 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack by Green.
