Big Second Half Leads Tornados to 34-24 Road Conference Victory in Greensboro

More news about: Brevard

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Brevard College football team (2-3, 2-0 USA South) scored 21 points in the second half to come back and take a 34-24 road victory over Greensboro College (0-5, 0-2 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at Pride Field in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The victory marked Brevard's second consecutive USA South Conference triumph, as the Tornados improved to 2-0 in conference action and 6-0 all-time over GC.

Chancellor Lee-Parker, the reigning USA South Offensive Player of the Week, picked up right where he left off with another career performance, totaling a career-high 184 rushing yards on 21 carries (8.8 YPC) with a TD on the ground and adding three catches for 30 yards and another touchdown through the air for a grand total of 214 yards of combined offense for the Auburn, Georgia senior ball carrier. Lee-Parker's 184 yards on the ground are the most by a Tornado since Mitchell Yoder's 220 yards on the ground at Methodist (October 30, 2021).

Sophomore quarterback Ethan Beamish completed 10 passes on 18 attempts for 273 yards and threw for a career-high four touchdowns, with Tornado top target Zackary Orr grabbing three catches for a career-high 120 yards and two touchdown scores. Cooper Hogan hauled in a game-long 75-yard pass, while Jordan Rowell grabbed a 27-yard completion and Kyle Lovett caught his first TD as a Tornado with a 21-yard TD reception.

Brevard's offense outpaced the Pride 483-406 in total yards, with BC holding a 210-92 edge on the ground and Greensboro having a 314-273 advantage through the air.

BC's defense had its best outing of the season in the turnover department, as the Tornados grabbed a season-high three interceptions and forced a fumble to win the turnover battle, 4-1. Junior defensive back Quintrell Bowman had a career-best 11 tackles and his first career interception as well, while Terrion Burgess and Montrell Stinson also secured their first career picks.

Sophmore defensive lineman Robert Dorsey totaled eight tackles with a tackle-for-loss and half a QB sack, and graduate linebacker Toby Naylor, senior defensive lineman Ernest Smith II, and junior defensive back James Woods each logged five tackles with Smith II getting a TFL and half a QB sack. Jordan Ramey recovered his first career fumble and totaled a sack, as Brevard totaled four total sacks and five tackles-for-loss on the afternoon. Woods came up with the special teams play of the day, blocking a Greensboro field goal attempt late in the third quarter as well.

Brevard's first drive of the contest resulted in a punt, but the BC defense answered as Burgess picked off Greensboro's pass and returned the ball 39 yards into the GC red zone.

Brevard promptly punched the ball in as Beamish found Lee-Parker for a 26-yard touchdown connection, giving BC the early lead, 7-0.

Greensboro used an eight play, 72-yard drive to tie things right back up at 7-7 with 10:26 left in the first period.

BC's offense wasted no time answering right back, as Beamish connected with Orr for a 49-yard touchdown strike that gave Brevard the lead back, 13-7 after the point-after try was missed.

Greensboro again developed a lengthy drive with an 11-play, 64-yarder on the ensuing possession, but the hosts missed a 20-yard field goal attempt. Brevard was forced to go three and out on its next possession before GC cashed in a 30-yard field goal early in the second quarter to cut the deficit to three points, 13-10.

Another Tornado punt led to Greensboro's second touchdown of the afternoon, as the Pride started their next possession around midfield and took the lead with a touchdown pass that gave the hosts a 17-13 edge. Brevard drove into Greensboro territory, but a fourth-and-five attempt came up just short of the sticks. GC would take its four-point margin into the locker rooms.

Brevard's defense began the second half with a three-and-out to give the Tornado offense the ball back. Lee-Parker busted off four gains of five or more yards, with three of them 10-plus yards, before Beamish found Lovett for a 21-yard touchdown score that gave Brevard the lead back, 20-17.

Both sides traded punts before an 11-play, 82-yard Greensboro drive was all for naught when Woods blocked a 22-yard field goal attempt, keeping the Pride off the board.

On third-and-eight on BC's ensuing drive, Beamish launched it deep to Hogan and connected on a 74-yard bomb that placed BC inside the five-yard line. Lee-Parker punched it in from three yards out as BC extended its lead to a 27-17 margin.

Bowman picked off a Greensboro pass on the next drive, setting the Tornados up with short field. A holding call erased a 23-yard gain for Lee-Parker, but on second and 14 Beamish dialed up another long ball, connecting with Orr for a 62-yard touchdown strike as BC capped off a 21-0 scoring run and extended the gap to 34-17.

Greensboro was able to find the end zone with 6:20 left to play, cutting the deficit to 10 34-24. After a punt, Stinson sealed the game with an interception on GC's last drive of the ballgame, as the Tornados improved to 2-0 in USA South play with a hard-fought road win.

Brevard will return home to face Southern Virginia University on Saturday, October 7 at 1 p.m. at Ives-Lemel Family Field. The contest will serve as BC's annual Youth Day and will also be a white-out contest.
