More news about: Belhaven

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Belhaven Football team continued their winning ways by knocking off North Carolina Wesleyan, 35-14, on Saturday at Vernon T. Bradley Jr. Stadium. With the win, the Blazers are 4-0 for the first time in program history.

The Battling Bishops struck first with a two-yard score with nine minutes to play in the opening quarter. The Blazers' offense got things going early in the second as Tim Johnson found a wide-open Jacobey James-Grace for a 30-yard touchdown.

The Blazers turned the tide late in the first half as Chavarius Garrett hauled in his first career interception to give Belhaven an opportunity to take a lead into the locker room. The offense capitalized on the very next play as the Johnson to James-Grace connection struck again, this time from 34 yards out to give Belhaven a 14-7 lead at the half.

The momentum continued in the third as Kolbe Blunt gave the Blazers some separation with a 34-yard touchdown run. Blunt scampered in for his second score from 52 yards out to make the score 28-7 Blazers with 9:44 remaining in the contest.

The Blazers forced their second turnover of the game on the ensuing possession as Tyler Miller picked off a Battling Bishop pass to give Belhaven good field position midway through the final quarter. Devin Daniels found the endzone a few plays later to extend the Green and Gold's lead to 28 with just over six minutes to play. The ensuing PAT was a monumental one as Constantine Hontzas became Belhaven's all-time leader in PATs made with 107.

NC Wesleyan tacked on another touchdown in the waning seconds to put the final tally at 35-14 in favor of the Blazers, who have won their each of their first four games by at least 21 points.

Offensively, Kolbe Blunt led the way with 201 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Jacobey James-Grace finished with 68 yards and two scores on three receptions. Dee Gray and Carlton Brown led the defense with six tackles apiece. Tyler MillerChavarius Garrett and Landry Huddleston each forced turnovers in another impressive performance by the defensive unit.

The Blazers return to the Belhaven Bowl Stadium next Saturday, October 7th, to host a highly anticipated USA South matchup against the Huntingdon Hawks. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM.
