Belhaven Rolls Past Lyon 48-15

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Belhaven Football team rolled to a 48-15 road win over Lyon College on Saturday at Pioneer Stadium. With the win, the Blazers moved to 2-0 ahead of the USA South slate that is set to begin in two weeks.

It was the hosts who got on the board first by knocking home a short field goal to go up 3-0. The Scots found paydirt less than a minute later to take a 9-0 lead after the PAT try was no good. The Blazers got things going late in the opening quarter as Devin Daniels found the endzone on a 38-yard touchdown run.

After a Blazer punt, Jaheim Burkett and Charles Robinson combined for the pressure and fumble recovery to give Belhaven the ball back at the Lyon 40. Tim Johnson and the offense wasted no time as he found a diving Jacobey James-Grace on the next play for a 40-yard score.

The Blazers extended their lead to 21-9 midway through the second quarter as Kolbe Blunt broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run. After another defensive stop, Belhaven used the ground attack on an eight-play, 52-yard drive that was capped off by a Tim Johnson one-yard touchdown run with a minute to play in the half.

Lyon scored on their opening possession of the half to cut the lead to 28-15, but the Blazers responded as D'Ante Gallashaw punched it in from a yard out to extend the lead to 34-15. A quick three-and-out by the Scots led to another touchdown for Belhaven, this time on a 35-yard pass from Johnson to Cooper Tullo. Johnson finished the third quarter off with his second rushing  and fourth total touchdown of the game from seven yards out to put the tally at 48-15 in favor of Belhaven.

The second and third quarters were the difference in the game with Belhaven outscoring Lyon 41-6 in that span. The Blazers were dominant in the ground game once again, out-rushing Lyon 411-7. Belhaven racked up 518 total yards of offense compared to Lyon's 247. Johnson completed 5-of-11 passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns while adding 37 yards and two scores on the ground. Devin Daniels went for 127 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, with Kolbe Blunt recording 122 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Defensively, Carlton Brown and Landry Huddleston each recorded six stops, with Brown recording 1.5 sacks and Huddleston an even 2.0.

Belhaven will enjoy a bye week next week before hosting Greensboro in the USA South opener on Saturday, September 23rd. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM.
