UD Football Suffers Loss to UW-P Pioneers

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team finished Saturday night under the lights of Chalmers Field with almost 400 yards of offense in a 19-35 loss to the unbeaten UW-Platteville Pioneers who were receiving votes in this week's Top-25.

The Hall of Fame/Battle of the Bridge game showcased two teams who both finished with similar statistics when the game ended. The two squads each finished with 22 first downs. The Spartans rushed for 24 yards, threw for 334 yards to end the evening with a combined 358 total yards. UW-P rushed for 136 yards, passed for 292 yards for a combined 427 yards. UD held the edge in possession time with 32:30 to UW-P's 27:30.

The Spartans scored in three out of the four quarters. Their first score was a 26 yard strike from K.C. Moore to Lovell Armstead with 9:19 left in the second quarter. A Loam Smith extra point cut the Pioneer lead to 14-7. Armstead added a second touchdown, this time rushing from seven yards out with 2:53 left in the third quarter. A blocked extra point would leave the score 28-13. UD tacked on another score with 6:38 in the fourth with Jamari Jenkins on seven yard catch from Moore.Ben Gultig started the game and completed 4-8 passes for 26 yards before K.C Moore came off the bench to complete 28-42 passes for 308 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Za'Cameron Brice led the Spartans receivers with 10 catches for 97 yards. Torre Butts Jr. grabbed a dozen catches for 52 yards along with teammate Wade Sheets who hauled in 12 catches for 46 yards. Hunter Preston caught four passes for 47 yards. The Spartans struggled on the ground with just 24 yards. Armstead led with seven carries for 18 yards.

Brock Carter led all defensive with a game high 11 tackles. Eric Evans collected six tackles with one for losses of two yards. UD ended the night with four tackles for losses of nine yards.

Connor Halla punted five times for 179 yards and inside the 20 yard line once. Liam Smith kicked off four times for 251 yards for a 62.8 average.

The Spartans inducted the members of the 2011 Football Team, who won the conference championship into the Hall of Fame class of 2023. Along with the members of that team included:Amber (Meyer) DeSousa (C'14), John E. Diercks (C'63), Davivorn Dowe (C'12), Alexandra (Watkins) Zurbuchen (C'14/MBA'17), Dan Runkle (Hall of Distinction), Trent Merzon (C'92 - Jerry Petitogue Coach Award), Thaddeus A. Foucher (C'78 - Solomon W. Butler Character and Courage Award).

UD (0-2) will enjoy their off week on Sept. 16 before returning to Chalmers Field to host the Loras College Duhawks (1-1) in the Key City Clash on Sept. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
