No. 10 Cortland Routs Lycoming, 62-7

WILLIAMSPORT, PA. - Cortland scored on each of its first nine full possessions and finished with a 595-144 advantage in total offensive yardage as the nationally 10th-ranked Red Dragons defeated host Lycoming College, 62-7, in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
 
Zac Boyes (Buffalo/Kenmore West) completed 22-of-30 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns for his fourth career 300-yard passing game. Vin Mazzone (Staten Island/St. Peter's) was 4-for-6 through the air for 54 yards and a score as Cortland (2-0) finished with 400 passing yards.
 
JJ Laap (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) caught six passes for 139 yards and a score and Cole Burgess (Greenwich) ended with seven receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown. Laap, who registered his 100th career reception last weekend, now has 106 career catches. Burgess surpassed the 100-career catch mark in this contest and how has 104 receptions as a Red Dragon.
 
Jaden AlfanoStJohn (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach) and Ashton Capone (Saratoga Springs) each rushed for two scores, and AlfanoStJohn also caught a TD pass. Connor Mooney (Brentwood) added a TD reception on his lone catch. Capone ran 13 times for 65 yards, Boyes had seven rushes for 46 yards and AlfanoStJohn carried the ball 11 times for 34 yards.
 
Mike Baloga (New Windsor/Cornwall) made both of his field goal attempts and all eight of his PAT kicks. Patrick Luby (Ridgewood, NJ) averaged 41 yards per punt on two kicks and had six kickoffs go for touchbacks. On defense, Jack Winey (Lindenhurst) and Will Ruckert (Lindenhurst) each finished with five tackles. Ruckert, Max Llewellyn (Sayville) and Nick Lardaro (Smithtown/Smithtown East) were each credited with a sack.
 
Lycoming (0-2) was led by Terrance Oliver, who ran 11 times for 116 yards. His 75-yard run early in the second quarter accounted for the lone points by the Warriors. Will Fish was 6-of-16 passing for 37 yards. Hunter Campbell finished with nine tackles and David Schley made six tackles.
 
Cortland scored seven touchdowns and two field goals over its first nine possessions, excluding taking a knee to end the first half. After holding Lycoming to a three-and-out to start the game, Cortland's first drive led to an AlfanoStJohn 1-yard TD run. The Red Dragons then recovered an onside kickoff and, two plays later, Boyes hit Laap for a 54-yard TD pass to make it 14-0. The lead grew to 21-0 in the first quarter on a Capone 4-yard scoring rush.
 
AlfanoStJohn's 5-yard TD run with 13:38 left in the second quarter extended lead to 28-0. Oliver broke off his long TD run on the first play of Lycoming's next series, but Cortland scored three more times before the half on a Capone 1-yard run, a Baloga 38-yard field goal and a 21-yard Burgess TD catch from Boyes. Cortland's 17 points in the second half came via a 29-yard TD reception by AlfanoStJohn, a Baloga 31-yard field goal and a 25-yard scoring pass from Mazzone to Mooney.
 
Cortland will host currently 22nd-ranked Susquehanna University at 1 p.m. next Saturday. Susquehanna improved to 2-0 with a 6-5 win at Brockport after a field goal in the closing seconds.
