William Paterson Falls to Dickinson, 29-17

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (0-2) fell 29-17 to Dickinson (1-1) on the road Sept. 9.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With 32 seconds remaining in the first quarter, William Paterson was pinned deep in its own territory before being forced to punt. A WP miscue resulted in a safety and gave McDaniel a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Devils began a drive on the WP 45-yard line in the second quarter with 4:27 on the clock and were pushed back 10 yards after a holding penalty. However, Dickinson recorded a 55-yard catch-and-score on the following play to extend the lead to nine (9-0).
  • WP responded immediately on the ensuing drive as junior quarterback Christopher Leimberg led the Pioneers down the field. He completed four passes for 48 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown completion to senior Matt Clarke to cap a seven-play 62-yard scoring drive that pulled the Pioneers within two.
  • In the third quarter with less than 10 minutes left in the frame, the Devils began a drive at the WP 39-yard line and needed just five plays to find the end zone after a 27-yard touchdown.
  • William Paterson countered with a 33-yard field goal by freshman Robert Crehan to trim the deficit to five (15-10).
  • On a drive that started at the 8:45 mark of the fourth quarter, Dickinson pushed the lead to double figures (22-10) following a 36-yard touchdown run.
  • After forcing a three-and-out, the Devils got the ball right back and marched 51 yards down the field and into the end zone on seven plays.
  • With the Pioneers regaining possession, Leimberg completed four consecutive passes for 55 yards before finding senior Taz Burton in the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown.
