Hopkins Produces National-Best Six Academic All-Americans

AUSTIN, TX – Johns Hopkins placed a national-best six players on the 2022 College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) NCAA Division III Academic All-America Football Team it was announced today.  Three Blue Jays earned first team honors while three were named to the second team.
Graduate students Ross Andersson (DB) and Alan Gorny (OL) were repeat selections on the first team and were joined on the first team by graduate student Emmett Turner (TE).  Earning a spot on the second team were graduate student Ryan Stevens (QB), senior JR Woods (OL) and junior Luke Schuermann (DL).  Woods and Schuermann are both making their second appearance on the team as both earned first team honors in 2021.

Coupled with the Blue Jays' national-record eight selections last year, the 14 Academic All-Americans for Johns Hopkins in 2021 and 2022 are the most ever in a two-year period for any college football team in the nation at any level.  Johns Hopkins is also the first football program in the nation at any level to produce six or more Academic All-Americans in more than one year.
 
With his selection, Andersson becomes the first three-time Academic All-American in program history (2020/2nd Team, 2021/1st Team).  Andersson graduated in May with a 3.91 cumulative grade point average and a degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering.  He was a Second Team All-Centennial selection this season after totaling 42 tackles and six pass breakups from his safety position.  He is the fifth Johns Hopkins student-athlete in any sport to earn Academic All-America honors three times.
 
Gorny becomes the first Blue Jay offensive lineman to twice year First Team Academic All-America honors with his selection this season.  Also a member of the 2022 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Gorny graduated in May with a degree in molecular and cellular biology and a 3.88 cumulative grade point average.  He primarily played tackle this season and helped lead a Blue Jay offensive line that paved the way for a unit that averaged 43.7 points and 499.4 yards per game.
 
Turner bumps up to the first team after earning second team honors in 2021.  Already the only tight end in program history to earn Academic All-America honors, Turner adds his selection to a 2022 resume that also includes D3football.com All-America and All-Region and First Team All-Centennial honors.  He had 44 receptions for 323 yards and four touchdowns this season and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a 3.68 cumulative GPA.
 
Stevens adds his Second Team Academic All-America nod to a 2022 haul of honors that also includes Fourth Team D3football.com All-America, D3football.com Region 2 and Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Year, First Team D3football.com All-Region and First Team All-Centennial.  He graduated in just three years with a double major in Applied Math/Statistics and Economics and a 3.89 cumulative GPA and played the 2022 season as a fourth-year graduate student.  He led the way offensively for the Blue Jays this season as he was 241-of-346 for 2,649 yards and 35 touchdowns against just five interceptions; he also rushed for 224 yards and three scores.
 
Schuermann is quickly becoming one of the most decorated players in program history as he is now a two-time Academic All-American, a two-time All-American, has twice been named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Year and has also earned First Team All-Centennial Conference and First Team D3football.com All-Region honors two times as well.  He set JHU single-season records with 14 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss in 2022 with a career-high 70 tackles from his defensive end position.  Schuermann is majoring in mechanical engineering and biomechanics and has a 3.63 cumulative GPA.
 
Woods rounds out Johns Hopkins' Academic All-Americans as the Campbell Trophy finalist adds his second team selection to his first team nod in 2021.  Woods, who was also a Second Team D3football.com All-American and a First Team All-Centennial and D3football.com All-Region pick, was the anchor of the Blue Jay offensive line again in 2022.  He helped JHU average 43.7 points and 499.4 yards per game during the 2022 season.  Woods is majoring in economics and carries a 3.62 cumulative GPA.
 
To be eligible for College Sports Communicators Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA, be a sophomore or above and a starter or significant reserve.  Academic All-District Teams are named from eight districts with those individuals being placed on the Academic All-America ballot.
