More news about: Lake Forest

The Lake Forest College football team defeated visiting Grinnell College 49-0 on Saturday.

The Forester defense improved on what were already impressive statistics for the season, allowing just two first downs and 63 total yards in the contest. Lake Forest opponents have now managed to gain just 79 yards per game on the ground and 96.4 through the air this season.

Senior Alex Bendler led the home team with six tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss. He is now tied-for-ninth in program history with 29.5 tackles for loss in his career.

Lake Forest's offense, meanwhile, ran for a season-high 351 yards and school record 9.8 yards per carry. Senior tailback Armani Brown led the way with 125 yards and on just four attempts and scored from 38, 2, and 70 yards out. Graduate student Damon Bonds added 104 yards on 18 carries and 63 of senior quarterback Tre Stewart's 74 yards came on the game's first score.

Brown's first two touchdowns made the score 21-0 early in the second quarter and sophomore quarterback Josh Gasca connected with sophomore wide receiver Trevor Land on a 32-yard score and senior Jake De La Torre on an 8-yarder later in the period. The home team took a 35-0 advantage into the locker room at the half.

Brown rumbled 70 yards for the first of two third quarter touchdowns for the Foresters. The other was the first career score for sophomore Cayden Mazurek who hauled in an 11-yard pass in the end zone from senior signal-caller Vincent Wallace.

Wallace was also the holder on each of freshman Beckham Sonnabend's seven extra points on the day. Sonnabend also averaged 59.9 yards on his eight kick-offs.

The shutout was Lake Forest's second of 2022 and 190th in program history.

The Foresters improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in Midwest Conference play while Grinnell fell to 2-4, both overall and in the league.

Lake Forest will play its final home game of the season next Saturday. Kickoff against Monmouth College is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
