Football beats Ohio Northern in OAC clash

The Muskingum football team beat Ohio Northern on Saturday afternoon, 23-7. The win was the fourth of the season for the Muskies.

Notables

  • The win marked the second straight year the Muskies have beaten Ohio Northern. It's the first time that Muskingum has beaten Ohio Northern in back-to-back seasons since the 1988 and 1989 campaigns. Muskingum has won 26 games against the Polar Bears in the all-time series.
  • Senior quarterback Jordan Garrett ranks second all-time in career passing yards with 5,064. He is only 106 yards shy of the school record of 5,170 yards held by Jake Burn (2007-10). Garrett also ranks third in total offense with 5,586 yards (5,064 passing, 522 rushing).
  • Senior wide receiver Zuri Edmondson ranks sixth all-time in career receiving yards with 1,434.

  • Muskingum hosts John Carroll on Saturday, October 29, for its Faculty and Staff Appreciation Game in the Bullock Health and Wellness Complex. The contest is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and is a Halloween Theme game. All fans are encouraged to wear a costume.

  • Ohio Northern ended the outing with 320 yards and 16 first downs.
  • Adan Figueroa went 14-of-32 for 197 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Figueroa also added 31 yards rushing.

  • Nate Dean led the Polar Bear receivers with one grab for 38 yards and one touchdown.

How it Happened

  • Muskingum took a 7-0 lead midway through the opening quarter when Garrett scored on a one-yard run to cap an 11-play, 67-yard drive.
  • The Muskies extended their lead to 14-0 on an 11-play, 74-yard drive that culminated with Garrett hitting Keitt for a 30-yard touchdown strike at the 4:34 mark of the second quarter.
  • Ohio Northern trimmed its deficit to 14-7 after Figueroa found Dean for a 38-yard score late in the second quarter.
  • A Howell interception in the waning seconds of the half set the Muskies up with a short field at the ONU 15. Two plays later, Garrett completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Goodman to give the Muskies a 20-7 lead at the break.
  • Muskingum capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter when freshman kicker Aaron Meyers booted a 25-yard field goal.
