Balanced Attack Leads MIT to 35-6 Home Victory Over Dean College

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 35, Dean College 6

- Records: MIT (2-1); Dean College (0-4)

- Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium)

- The Lead: Led by a three-touchdown performance from senior Jay Theriault (Boxford, Mass.), two passing touchdowns from first-year Chase Harmon (West Linn, Ore.) and a three-sack outing from graduate student Sam Gozelski (East Northport, N.Y.), MIT picked up a 35-6 non-conference win over Dean College on Alumni Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- On the first drive of the game, it was the Bulldogs who marched down the field to seize the early 6-0 advantage. Dean used a 59-yard pass from Darren McDermott to Mozes Mooney to get into the red zone and converted two plays later when Ki'Sean Bullard found the end zone from five yards out. Senior Adam Zimmermann (Houston, Texas) blocked the extra point attempt as MIT has now blocked at least one kick in all three games in 2022.

- In the final drive of the first quarter, the Engineers ran the ball on eight straight plays as the game headed into the second period. MIT rushed it another three times to open the second quarter as Theriault eventually scored from one yard out for his first touchdown of the day and the 7-6 MIT lead.

- On the ensuing Dean possession, MIT blocked a Bulldog punt and recovered the ball in Dean territory at the 43-yard line. From there, Theriault ran the ball on nine plays in the 10-play drive before scoring from three yards out on third and goal for the 14-6 edge with 8:01 left in the period.

- MIT closed out the first half with another scoring drive as Harmon found tight end Jonathan Berger (Vernon, N.Y.) across the middle from 18 yards out for his first career passing touchdown and the 21-6 advantage at the break.

- The Engineers continued to dominate on the other side of halftime as well as MIT had over 20 minutes of possession in the second half alone. Theriault scored for the third time on the day on the third play of the third quarter as he found the end zone from 54 yards out to make it 28-6. After a three-and-out for the Bulldogs, Harmon threw his second touchdown of the day as this time he found first-year Colin Vollmer (Cleveland, Ohio) from 18 yards out for the 35-6 score with 9:21 left in the third.

- From that point on, the MIT defense forced four more three-and-out drives and overall held the Bulldogs scoreless for the final 58:40 of the game in the non-conference victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Overall, MIT held a commanding 39:15-20:45 advantage in time of possession and a 386-177 edge in yards of total offense. Led by Theriault, the Engineers also led the Bulldogs on the ground by a 263-11 margin.
