Coe Rolls Past Cornell 56-7, Extends Streak to 22 Straight

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College football team opened its 2022 season with a dominant 56-7 victory over Cornell, securing the first Brenner Cup point of the season. The victory, which extends the streak to 22 over Cornell, featured just over 500 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns for the Kohawks. The hosts started hot, scoring 21 unanswered points in the first quarter. The opening period was capped off by a defensive touchdown with Alex Aitchison recovering a fumble in the endzone, giving his team a 21-0 advantage. The Kohawks added three more touchdowns in the second quarter, getting a pair of rushing scores from Ray Seidel and a receiving score from Cooper Zeck. Coe added another touchdown in the third and fourth quarters before Cornell broke the shutout with just 2:25 left to play. The victory moves Coe to 1-0 on the season while Cornell begins the campaign 0-1. 
 
GAME FACTS:
COE 56 - CORNELL 7 

  • Starting quarterback Nick Casey was 9-of-13 passing, posting 106 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the first two quarters. Matt Walton and Carter Maske split duties in the second half, combining to go 11-of-13 for 84 yards, one passing and two rushing touchdowns. 
  • Trenton Barnes and Ray Seidel worked in a timeshare in the first three quarters, racking up 194 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Barnes carried the rock 12 times and posted 126 yards for an average of 10.5 yards per carry. 
  • Dominic Shepardson led the receiving effort, posting 58 yards on a team-high six catches. His first touchdown of the year came in the opening quarter on a screen pass where he evaded numerous Ram defenders before scampering for a 24-yard score. Cooper Zeck caught the other touchdown through the air on a three-yard pass from Casey just before the end of the first half. 
  • Coe's first-team defense played the first two quarters before resting in the second half but the starters still made a big impact. Aitchison recorded two solo tackles, both for losses and two quarterback hurries in addition to his touchdown. Linebacker Ben Adelsberger forced two fumbles in the game and added four solo tackles for the Kohawks to lead the starters. Fellow linebacker Jay Oostendorp saw limited action in the game but registered a pair of tackles and set up Coe's second touchdown with a pick midway through the first quarter. 
  • Mitchell Eckardt led the team with eight tackles overall while Mitchel Helmkamp was second with seven stops and one TFL. Adin Wilson joined Aitchison with multiple tackles for loss, recording two TFLs and four total tackles. Freshman kicker Julian Ayala Garcia was a perfect 8-of-8 on his extra-point attempts and added one touchback on kick-off duties. 

Up next: The Kohawks hit the road for their final non-conference game of the season, traveling to Holland, Michigan on Saturday, September 10 for a matchup with Hope College at 1 PM.
