BW Football Falls in Back and Forth Game to Mount St. Joseph in 2022 Opener

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University football team opened the 2022 season as it fell in a back- and-forth game to Mount St. Joseph University by a final score of 31-28 on Schueler Field.

Mount St. Joseph (1-0) beat BW (0-1) the inaugural meeting.

Offensively for the Yellow Jackets, junior quarterback Joey Marousek (North Royalton) completed 9-of-15 passes for 131 yards with one touchdown and one interception in his very first game in the Brown and Gold.  Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference running back Jon Murray, Jr. (Cincinnati/Withrow) rushed for a career-high 177 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns in his first game collegiate game played in his hometown.  With his 18th carry of the game, Murray, Jr. became the school's all-time carries leader with 571. Junior wide out Vinny Lomeo (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's College Institute) caught three passes for 63 yards and his first collegiate touchdown. Defensively, senior linebacker Mason Levasseur (Panama City, Fla. / South Walton) and junior linebacker Vontae Jackson (Cleveland/John hay) led the way with 12 and 11 tackles, respectively.

The Lions were led by junior quarterback Josh Taylor completed 20-of-31 passes for 261 yards with two touchdowns.  Taylor also rushed for 20 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns. Cornell Beachem Jr. led the rushing attack with 130 yards on 22 carries.  Beachem, Jr. also led the receiving unit with eight catches for 131 yards.  Defensively, Anthony Wright recorded 10 stops.

3rd Quarter (BW, 21-17)

  • 0:14     Murray, Jr. 1-yard run (Sarris kick is good)

4th Quarter (MSJ, 31-28)

  • 9:25     Omar Porter Jr. 4-yard pass from Taylor (Farfsing kick is good)
  • 3:43     Murray, Jr. 4-yard run (Sarris kick is good)
  • 2:13     Joey Newton 3-yard pass from Taylor (Farfsing kick is good)

BW is back in action on Saturday, September 10 when it remains on the road and travels to Wilmington for the OAC opener against Wilmington College on Townsend Field inside Williams Stadium at 1:30 p.m.
