Cortland's Devin Smith to Compete at SPIRAL Tropical Bowl Jan. 15 in Orlando

More news about: Cortland

SUNY Cortland senior defensive lineman Devin Smith (Utica/Utica Notre Dame) has been selected to compete at the 2022 SPIRAL Tropical Bowl All-Star Game on Saturday, Jan. 15 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

The game features numerous Division I players from the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), along with Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and Division II schools. Smith is one of only seven Division III players among the 154 listed on the game's official rosters.

Smith is making his second postseason all-star game appearance. He played in the FCS National Bowl in mid-December, and his strong play in that contest helped him land a spot in the Tropical Bowl. The Tropical Bowl showcases top college football seniors to NFL scouts and general managers, and according to the bowl's website more than 350 alumni of the game have gone on to the NFL since its inception in 2016.

Smith, a Cortland team captain, transitioned to defensive tackle this past season after playing at defensive end three years from 2017-19. He was named to the 2021 D3football.com All-America third team and All-Region 2 first team, and he is a two-time All-Empire 8 first team selection (2019, 2021).

During the 2021 season, Smith recorded 46 tackles (22 solo) in 12 games. His seven tackles for loss included 6.5 sacks, and he also registered three pass breakups, three forced fumbles and 27 quarterback hurries. Smith made seven tackles in Cortland's win versus Ithaca and six tackles each in victories against Brockport and Hartwick, and the NCAA first round versus Springfield.

Cortland finished the year with an 11-1 record, tying a school record for wins in a season. The Red Dragons posted a 10-0 regular-season record - the program's first unbeaten regular season since 1988 - and won the Empire 8 title with a 6-0 mark. Cortland advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament to tie for ninth place nationally.
