Seahawks triumphant with a host of seniors on Senior Day

NEWPORT, R.I. (October 30, 2021) - Senior Max DeVito (Cedar Grove, N.J.) hauled in seven catches for 103 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Salve Regina University football (8-1, 4-1 CCC) over visiting Curry College (2-5, 0-4 CCC), 47-14, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Senior Day at Toppa Field.

The following 35 Seahawks were recognized on field in pre-game ceremonies representing the senior classes from 2021 and 2022 - Spencer Anapol, John Bowen, Dylan Budnik, Zack Catarius, Benjamin Cortes, Bobby de Poortere, Max DeVito, Jason Dwight, Stephen Etienne, Justin Fernandes, Blake Guerrieri, Hayden Hulme, Joe Hyland, Jake Kelleher, Nicholas Lane, Michael LaRovera, Zach Letellier, Jack Maguire, Joey Mauriello, Tyler McGovern, Matt Messner, Jacob Miller, Dylan Nagy, Ian Nalepinski, Pete Noonan, Ty O'Loughlin, Alex Pitser, Matt Sylvia, Elian Telford, Pat Travers, Joe Vecchione, Brian Velez, Franz Von Stetina, Connor Welsh, John Whitehouse.

Salve Regina stopped Curry on the opening series, three and out, and took over at its own 30 after a Geoffrey Wilson punt. The Seahawks scored 19 points in the first quarter on their first three possessions. Senior QB Jack Maguire (Abington, Mass.) tossed TD strikes to DeVito finishing an eight-play, 70-yard drive, then to Hayden Hulme (Milford, Conn.) finishing a nine-play, 88-yard drive, and finally to Pat Travers (Plymouth, Mass.) following a Justin Mullaney pass intercepted by Matt Sylvia (East Greenwich, R.I.) at the Curry 31 that Sylvia return 16 yards to the Curry 15.

The first half featured seven turnovers, four by Salve Regina - two fumbles, two intercepted passes - in a steady drizzle and occasional downpour.

DeVito caught his second touchdown pass from Maguire with 5:45 remaining in the first half to put Salve up, 26-7, before the Colonels closed the half with a Mullaney to Gabe DeSouza 17-yard scoring strike. DeVito caught his third touchdown of the day on the opening series of the third quarter, a four-yard strike finishing an eight-play, 65-yard drive.

Maguire completed 18 of 32 passes for 244 yards and five touchdowns. Salve Regina had 27 first downs to just eight for Curry.

Nine different ball carriers contributed to 276 yards rushing for the Seahawks, led by senior Nicholas Lane (Pembroke, Mass.) and his 102 yards on 10 carries. Lane had an eight-yard TD run that capped a five-play, 66-yard drive midway through the third quarter. Junior Max Ward Pennington, N.J.) made all four of his PAT kicks for Salve Regina.

On the final significant drive for the Seahawks in the fourth quarter, Salve Regina stayed on the ground with Sam Capodice (Berlin, Conn.) handing off to Jacob Miller (Lynn, Mass.), Evan Laroche (Bellingham, Mass.), and Joseph Vachon (Medfield, Mass.). Miller took it into the endzone from two yards out to cap an 11-play, 55-yard scoring drive. Matteo Marasco (Delray Beach, Fla.) made the final point with his kick before kicking off for the Seahawks.

Joe Vecchione (Chelmsford, Mass.), Michael LaRovera (Ansonia, Conn.), and Jesse Lagrosa (Hillsdale, N.J.) each recorded a sack. Vecchione added two other tackles for losses.
