Stevens, Defense Power Hopkins Past Gettysburg, 50-0

More news about: Johns Hopkins

GETTYSUBURG, PA – Johns Hopkins junior quarterback Ryan Stevens threw for 366 yards and five touchdowns and the Blue Jay defense held host Gettysburg to just 115 yards as the Blue Jays cruised to their 13th consecutive win against the Bullets with a 50-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Musselman Stadium.

The Blue Jays sprinted to a 30-0 lead at the half as Stevens was 24-of-38 for 297 yards and four of his five touchdowns before halftime.  He needed less than nine minutes to give the Blue Jays all the offense they would need as he capped Hopkins' first two drives of the game with touchdown passes of seven and 21 yards to Harrison Wellmann and Quinn Revere, respectively. The touchdown strike to Wellmann capped a 17-play, 87-yard game-opening drive, while Revere's score came seven plays after the Bullets failed to convert on a fourth-and-four from their own 31 on their opening drive.

Wellmann and Revere were on the back end of Stevens' two second-quarter touchdown passes as well as Wellmann caught a five-yarder to polish off a 66-yard drive midway through the quarter and Revere caught a perfect fade in stride and raced 48 yards for a score with just over six minutes remaining in the opening half.  A 42-yard Kyle Battles field goal with 10 seconds on the second quarter clock accounted for the 30-0 halftime score.

While the Blue Jay offense was busy scoring on five of seven first-half drives, the Hopkins defense was holding the Bullets to just one first down and 54 yards of total offense in the opening 30 minutes.  Four of Gettysburg's first-half drives ended with punts and two others ended on a turnover on downs.

The 30-0 lead held until midway through the third quarter, when Stevens capped his day with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Wellmann that made it 36-0.  Sophomore Spencer Uggla added a 20-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and Artie Collins capped the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter for the Blue Jays.

Stevens' five touchdowns are one shy of his career high and this was his third game of the season with five or more touchdown passes.  Revere had nine receptions for 166 yards and two scores and Wellmann's three touchdowns came on six receptions that covered 92 yards.  Ryan Hubley added seven receptions for 84 yards and Danny Wolf's 53 yards on the ground paced a rushing attack that generated 164 yards on the day.

Duncan Van Kouteren and Joe Tischler paced the Blue Jay defense with six tackles apiece.  The Blue Jays held the Bullets to just seven first downs and the 115 yards of total offense.  Gettysburg's 35 rushing attempts generated just 33 yards and 10 of Gettysburg's 15 drives ended with punts.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 29 when the Blue Jays host Susquehanna in at Homewood Field

Notes:  JHU improved to 33-2 in its last 35 games in October with today's win • Today's 50-point effort marked the fifth time this season the Blue Jays have scored 50 or more points • Wellmann jumped to third in career touchdown receptions in JHU history (28) and Hubley moved to sixth in receptions (198).
