No. 13/16 Salisbury takes care of Rowan, 24-7

GLASSBORO, N.J. – No. 13/16 Salisbury University football team earned a 24-7 road win over the Rowan Profs in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action on Saturday. The Sea Gulls improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in NJAC play.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Quarter
  • Both teams were stopped just outside of the red zone on their opening possession of the game. Salisbury was stopped on a 4th-and-6 play and turned the ball over on downs. Rowan drove down the field on its ensuing drive and Myles Christian ended the drive with a diving interception.
Second Quarter
  • Salisbury held on the ball for 17 plays following the Christian interception. The 73-yard drive was capped off by a Bert Schrecongost 32-yard field goal to open the scoring.
  • Following a Rowan punt, Jack Lanham threw deep to Hunter Cleaver for a 33-yard touchdown grab to put Salisbury up 10-0 with five minutes left in the half.
Third Quarter
  • Rowan's opening drive of the second half ended similar to how the first drive of the game ended with a Christian interception but Salisbury turned the ball over on its first possession of the second half.
  • The Profs capitalized on the field position following the fumble recovery with a James Fara touchdown run to trim the Sea Gull lead to 10-7.
  • Salisbury responded well on its ensuing drive. Two plays following a 40-yard run by Lanham, Shamar Gray crossed into the end zone from nine yards out to put SU back up 17-7 with five minutes left in the third.
Fourth Quarter
  • Salisbury tacked on insurance in the fourth quarter when Joey Bildstein busted through the goal line on a dive play following two long runs to get inside the red zone. Schrecongost's extra point stretched SU's lead to 24-7.
  • Sam Pagella iced the game in the waning moments of the game with an interception to seal the conference win for the Sea Gulls.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Salisbury nearly doubled Rowan in total offense with 423 yards of offense compared to Rowan's 225.
  • Eight different Sea Gulls carried the ball to total 358 yards on the ground. Joey Bildstein led the rushing attack with 110 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown.
  • Jack Lanham combined for 152 yards of offense. He tallied 87 yards on 14 carries while passing for 65 yards with four completions and the 33-yard touchdown to Hunter Cleaver.
  • Shamar Gray and Chad Gleason accounted for 62 and 52 rushing yards respectively.
  • The defense forced three Mike Husni interceptions.
  • Myles Christian grabbed two picks in the game
  • Josh Adewumi, Sam Pagella and Jimmy Celentano each recorded nine stops in the game. Celentano added 1.5 tackles for loss.
  • Sean Carroll notched seven tackles in the secondary.
  • Bert Schrecongost made a 32-yard field goal and went 3-for-3 in point-after attempts.
ROWAN GAME NOTES
  • Rowan was held to a season-low in the run game with 120 yards on the ground.
  • Mike Husni went 9-for-17 for 105 yards and three picks.
  • James Fara notched 52 rushing yards.
  • A.J. Akins led the Rowan defense with 10 tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury returns to the nest for homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 23 against the Kean Cougars.
  • Kickoff from Sea Gull Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
  • Salisbury will recognize its 2020-21 Athletics Hall of Fame inductees at halftime.
