Blue Devils have little problem with Presentation in opener

ABERDEEN, SD (September 4, 2021) - Sean Borgerding (Jr, Spring Valley) threw for four first half touchdowns, two to Levy Hamer (Jr, Chicago, Ill), and UW-Stout was off to the races in a 42-14 romp over Presentation College Saturday, at Clark Swisher Field.

After not playing since the 2019 season, the Blue Devils (1-0) wasted little time they knew where the end zone was. After holding Presentation to 19 yards on the first drive of the game, Borgerding needed seven plays to get Stout on the board, converting two third down opportunities on runs by Rayshawn Graham (Sr, Blue Island, Ill). On first-and-10 from their own 37, Borcherding connected with Hamer for a 63-yard TD and, after a missed extra point attempt, Stout held a 6-0 lead.

On the ensuing drive, Presentation moved the ball, connecting on a 47-yard pass from QB Mike McPeek to Aiden Roddy. The Saints would self-destruct on the drive, first with a false start, followed by a 9-yard sack by the Blue Devils' Ethan Olson (Jr, Iola). Defensive back Kyle Wilson (So, Eau Claire) stepped in front of a pass on the Stout 11.

Borgerding needed only three plays to cash in, finding Hamer for an 83 yard score, and Hamer had 146 yards on two catches. The two-point conversion failed and Stout led 12-0.

Jack Meyer (Fr, Chippewa Falls) hit his first collegiate field goal, a 40-yarder with eight seconds left in the first period for a 15-0 Stout lead.

Borgerding engineered a 13-play, 67-yard, 7-minute drive in the second period and hit paydirt with a 16-yard TD pass to Cameron LeMay (Jr, Shoreview, Minn), LeMay's first collegiate score.

Stout stopped Presentation on downs at the Presentation 44. Graham would prove big in the following drive, collecting 38 yards - including a 25-yard scamper - and scored from the 1-yard line with 1:49 left in the half and a 29-0 lead.

The Blue Devil defense would give the offense another opportunity to score when Cannon Griner (So, Mesa, Ariz) intercepted the ball at the Presentation 37. Borgerding needed three plays in 33 seconds to score, hitting Robvon Jackson (Fr, Zumbrota, Minn) for a 52-yard scoring play with 24 seconds left on the clock and Stout carried a 36-0 lead into the locker room.

Stout was stopped for the first time in the game on the Blue Devils' first drive of the second half, but the defense got the ball back when Haydon Miller (Sr, Zimmerman, Minn) forced a fumble and Rex Meikle (So, Sturgeon Bay) recovered at the Stout 34.

Following offsetting penalities to start the drive, Borgerding and Tyler Seymour hooked up for a 16-yard pass play and a roughing the passer penalty on Presentation put the ball at the 35, where Graham rambled for a 35-yard score on the next play.

Presentation would get a couple of scores in the fourth period.

Borgerding completed 18 of 24 passes for 297 yards and four scores, the fourth in his career he would throw for four or more TDs in a single game. Hamer hauled in four catches for 152 yards - his third most yards in a single game - and two scores. Graham scored twice and carried the ball 20 times for 111 yards, his fifth career 100-yard game. Matt Pomietlo (Fr, Chippewa Falls) rushed seven times for 45 yards. Jackson had two catches for 59 yards and Arthur Cox had four receptions for 37 yards.

The Blue Devils racked up 456 yards of total offense, 297 passing, 159 rushing. Presentation had 330 yards of offense, 143 yards passing, 187 rushing. McPeek completed 12 of 30 passes for 143 yards. Innocent Okoh ran 23 times for 101 yards and two TDs.

Stout will host St. Norbert College, Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. at Don and Nona Stadium.
