WashU Falls on Senior Day to Millikin in OT

St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 9, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team had its Senior Day spoiled with a 35-28 overtime loss to Millikin University Saturday at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis 

With the game tied at 28-28, Millikin scored on its overtime possession on a five-yard run by quarterback Cal Pohrte. On the ensuing WashU possession, senior quarterback Johnny Davidson was picked off by David Rivers in the end zone to end the threat and secure the victory by the Big Blue.

Prior to the contest, WashU honored its 22 seniors. The Class of 2019 has recorded an overall record of 25-14 (.641), captured the 2016 University Athletic Association (UAA) championship, the 2016 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) title and made an appearance in the 2016 NCAA Playoffs. 

Davidson was 22-of-40 for 272 yards and four touchdowns as he eclipsed 7,000 passing yards in his career. WashU's offense was limited to 319 yards of total offense and had the ball for a season-low 19:34.

WashU's defense, which spent over two-third of the game on the field, allowed 451 yards of total offense and struggled to stop the Big Blue on third down (16-of-25)

Seniors wide receivers Tim Matthiessen (14 yards) Nick Watts (33 yards) each recorded touchdown receptions from Davidson in the opening half as the teams were tied 14-14 at half.

The Bears were limited to 131 yards in the opening half and were just 1-of-5 on third down. Richard Cosey ran for 102 yards in the opening half for Millikin, who was 8-of-11 on third down.

Sophomore wide receiver Jared Harrison and sophomore tight end Sam Fenske hauled in 24-yard touchdown receptions from Davidson to give WashU the 28-21 lead with 14:23 left in the fourth.

Senior Emmanuel Engermann led the receivers with four catches for 57 yards. 

Senior linebacker Jeff Marek and sophomore defensive back JT Streepy each had 11 tackles, while senior defensive lineman Michael Prescott had a season-high eight tackles, four tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Junior defensive lineman Peter Pigatti added three tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Sophomore defensive back TJ Perusek added a career-best two interceptions to increase the team total to 15, second best in the CCIW.

Davidson punted eight times for a season-best 45.4 average, and had a 58-yarder. He leads the CCIW with a 40.4 average.

WashU wraps up regular season play on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Carroll College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Waukesha, Wis.
