Rensselaer Shuts Out Anna Maria, 38-0

Y. - George Marinopoulos threw three touchdown passes and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) defense got at least one tackle from 31 different student-athletes as the Engineers shut out Anna Maria College 38-0 in a non-league football game at East Campus Stadium. RPI has won two straight games to improve to 3-1, while the Amcats fall to 0-4.

Rensselaer took control with 28 first quarter points, including a pair of touchdown passes from its junior quarterback. Senior Marc Meislahn opened the scoring with a 6-yard run to finish RPI's first possession, a 7-play, 58-yard drive.

Marinopoulos followed with a connection with classmate Vinnie McDonald on 31-yard scoring strike on the next possession and RPI made it 21-0 with a blocked punt returned for a score with 5:45 to play. Joe Deptula got to the punter deep in Anna Maria territory and Delano Munoz Whatts picked up the ball at the 1-yard line before going untouched into the end zone.

Sophomore Peter Lombardi put the Engineers ahead by four scores when he made an acrobatic catch in the end zone from 30 yards out with just over two minutes to go in the first quarter.

Junior Sanjay Krishnan opened the second quarter with a 33-yard field goal, followed by a 10-yard touchdown from Marinopolous to McDonald with 11:33 to play in the first half.

RPI held a 285-234 advantage in total offense with Marinopoulos hitting on 6 of 10 passes for 91 yards. McDonald had three catches for 52 yards and Lombardi had two for 32. Sophomore Dylan Burnett ran for 72 yards on five carries.

Defensively, junior defensive lineman Conor Ahern had five tackles, including a 3-yard sack and 2.5 tackles for a loss of four yards. He also intercepted a pass with a 12-yard return and had a pass breakup. Spencer Brockdorff had six tackles, Liam Sheehy had five and Josh Cohen also had five. RPI finished with four sacks (30 yards lost) and 12 tackles for lost yards (44 yards lost).

Ty'Rique Bruce led Anna Maria with 11 tackles, including five unassisted and 1.5 for lost yards (5). Tyshawn Anderson added eight stops.

Quarterback Emmanuel Leake was 16 of 32 for 142 yards, while also rushing for 28 yards. Alex Cohen caught six balls for 30 yards for the Amcats, who host Apprentice next Saturday at noon.

Rensselaer begins Liberty League play next week when the University of Rochester travel to Troy for a 12:05pm contest.
