BROCKPORT, NY – Freshman Raylens Boutin took his first two collegiate interceptions back for touchdowns, just four minutes apart in the third quarter, and the Brockport defense blanked visiting Framingham State as the Golden Eagles won 14-0 on Saturday in their home opener at Bob Boozer Field. Freshman quarterback Freddy June rolled up 207 total yards -- including 112 on the ground – in his first collegiate start.
Brockport evened its record at 1-1 overall and the Golden Eagles are now 25-3 over the course of the last three seasons. Framingham, which visited Brockport in an NCAA Division III Championship First Round game last November, saw its record fall to 0-2 on the season.
The Golden Eagles return to the field on Saturday when they travel to Buffalo State to take on a former Empire 8 rival in the Bengals. The contest is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at Coyer Field in Buffalo, NY.
Brockport's stout defensive effort ruled the day as the Golden Eagles held the visitors to 271 total yards of offense and forced seven turnovers (three INT's, one fumble recovery and three turnovers on downs). It was a group effort as four different defenders totaled a team-high seven tackles, including Alaan Montgomery, Kenny Hernandez, Lawrence Jenkins and Alex West. Jenkins was all over the field as he also posted 2.0 tackles for a loss of seven yards and broke up two passes.
Boutin finished the day with six tackles, two picks and two pass breakups. Derrick Cipriani also picked off a pass, while Ben Marshall broke up two passes of his own in the secondary.
Brockport got its ground game going, totaling 231 yards on 46 carries (5.0 yards per rush). June led the way in the rushing category (112 yards) but he was piggy-backed by senior Justin Morrison's 83 yards on 14 carries. Zach Samborski chipped in with 25 yards on eight carries.
Joseph Ortiz, who eclipsed 2,000 career receiving yards last Saturday at Hobart, caught three balls for 25 yards and needs just four more catches to tie the program's career record for receptions (220 Jake Spalik, 2010-13). DaQuan Hubbard added two catches for 55 yards. His effort included a team-high 44 yard grab.
The score was set at 0-0 before Boutin and the Bport defense took over midway through the third quarter. Framingham quarterback Adam Wojenski dropped back in his own end zone and sailed a pass high, right into the outstretched hands of Boutin, who return the INT 20 yards to the house to break the scoreless tie at the 7:12 marker. Exactly four minutes later, Wojenski went back Boutin's way and paid for it again, as the freshman picked off his second pass of the day and returned it 58 yards for a score to hand the home team a 14-0 lead.
That was all the scoring the Brockport defense would need as the Golden Eagles kept the Rams off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest, much to the delight of the Brockport faithful.
Andrew Covais and Josh Greenwood combined for seven tackles for Brockport.
Framingham's Adam Wojenski completed 23 of 50 passes for 170 yards, but he also threw three interceptions. Wojenski picked up 65 yards on the ground and he punted the ball eight times for 295 yards. Austin Nunn was his most popular target, catching six balls for 67 yards. Framingham's Cully Curran totaled a game-high 11 tackles, while breaking up one pass and blocking a field goal attempt.
