Strong Second Quarter Carries No. 6 Frostburg Past Kean

More news about: Frostburg State

UNION, N.J. – Frostburg senior quarterback Connor Cox completed three second-quarter touchdown passes and ran for another score as the sixth-ranked Bobcats cruised past Kean 50-6, Saturday.

The Bobcats led just 7-0 after the first quarter but exploded for 27 points in the second frame for their 13th-straight win on the road during the regular season.

FSU is 5-0 on the road this fall and the win over the Cougars (1-8, 1-7) pushed its overall record to 8-0 and 7-0 in the NJAC. The Bobcats are 8-0 for just third time in program history and for the first time since 1993.

The win also means the NJAC Championship game will be coming home to Frostburg next Saturday at 1:00 pm against in-state rival and 18th-ranked Salisbury (8-1, 7-1). The Sea Gulls lost to Wesley in overtime earlier this afternoon, 19-13. SU will be coming to Bobcat Stadium for the 45th meeting between the two schools.

Senior Grayson Boyce scored from a yard out in the first quarter for a 7-0 cushion before the offense put its foot on the gas in the second.

Cox found Boyce for a 31-yard scoring pass early in the second and on its third possession of the quarter, Cox connected with sophomore Aaron Curtis for a five-yard score with 6:29 showing on the clock for a 21-0 edge.

Kean quarterback Ryan Pangborn found Jameer Campbell for an eight-yard touchdown that cut the deficit to 21-6. It was the only score of the afternoon for the Cougars as Frostburg allowed the hosts into FSU territory just three times all game.

FSU tacked on two late touchdowns inside the final 31 seconds of the first half. Cox rushed for a 32-yard score with 31 seconds showing, and after Kean fumbled the kickoff at its 26, Cox hooked up with sophomore Terrell Brown for a 26-yard TD with 18 seconds left in the half.

In the third, sophomore kicker Jeremy Harrison knocked through a 28-yard field goal with 9:39 showing for a 37-6 lead. Boyce made the score 43-6 when he ran for a career-best 76-yard scoring run on second down.

Late in the fourth, first-year Dante Thompson pounced on a fumble at the Kean 31 and first-year running back Austin Gregory found the endzone from eight yards out to set the final score at 50-6.

Frostburg amassed 502 yards in total offense and on the flip side, the Bobcat defense smothered the Kean offense all afternoon and held the Cougars to just 126 yards on 52 plays. Frostburg also recovered three fumbles and forced seven punts.

Cox finished the afternoon with 193 yards through the air and those three first-half touchdowns. Sophomore Lincoln Ikwubuo hauled in five passes for 63 yards, while Boyce powered his way to 121 yards on 13 carries and two scores. Senior tailback Jamaal Morant came up just shy of 100 yards as he finished with 99 on 20 carries.

First-year Trevor Craig led the Bobcats with six total tackles and a tackle for loss, while junior Wayne Palmer posted four tackles with one behind the line of scrimmage.

Frostburg has now won 25-consecutive games when scoring first and has scored over 30 points in all eight contests this season.
