Rhodes connects on 33-yard field goal as time expires to overcome Millsaps

More news about: Rhodes

Jackson, Miss. - After missing their first two field goal attempts against Millsaps College, Rhodes College had the ball with six seconds left in the game on the 23 yard line. Junior Crew Jacobs pulled out the 33-yard kick to win the game as time expired, handing Millsaps their first loss of the season. The Lynx are now 4-1 on the year and are 2-1 in conference play.

Sophomore Morgan Koff found an opening up the middle for a 17-yard reception. Senior quarterback PJ Settles then ran the ball for 44 yards on two plays to earn the first touchdown of the game. On the second play of Millsaps' next drive, the Majors made a 56-yard rush to tie the game. With 2:46 left in the first half, Cameron Cluney punted the ball for Rhodes. The ball bounced toward the end zone from Millsaps' nine yard line when Eric Monroe dove and landed on the one yard line to push Millsaps back. The field position for the Majors ended with a punt to their own 48-yard line. Senior Josh Lucas picked up the ball for Rhodes and caught a Major off guard. Millsaps was handed a face mask penalty, allowing Rhodes to take over on the 34-yard line.

With seven seconds left in the first half, the Lynx tried for a 32-yard field goal, but hit the right post, their second field goal attempt on the night.

A sliding Adam Martinez connected with a 27-yard reception, taking the Lynx to Millsaps' 30-yard line on their second drive of the third quarter. That catch was negated two plays later when the Majors intercepted the ball in the end zone. With the third quarter winding down, Millsaps brought in a 27 yard reception on a diving catch to Rhodes' seven yard line, eventually resulting in the only score of the quarter.

Dontae Gray finished off an eight-play drive (all rushes) for the Lynx to begin the fourth quarter. His two-yard touchdown run tied the game 14-14. The Lynx defense forced Millsaps to punt with 8:37 to play and Rhodes capitalized, taking up 4:29 on the clock and going 78 yards in eight plays. Rhodes took their first lead of the game on a five-yard rush by Settles.

Millsaps took over with 4:06 to go and after Alden Seger was ejected for targeting, Millsaps was set up on first and goal on the 10-yard line. Three plays later, Millsaps tied the game, with the Lynx taking over after a Martinez 29-yard return and Rhodes holding penalty, on their own 15-yard line. With 35 seconds remaining, a Hail Mary attempt by the Lynx went Rhodes' way after Millsaps was assessed a 15-yard penalty for pass interference. Rhodes was now at their own 44-yard line. Four complete passes towards Millsaps' sidelines, two by Andrew Herring, moved the Lynx 28 yards. A Settles 20-yard rush on third and three stopped the clock with six seconds left in the game, allowing Rhodes to run off the field in victory on the last-second field goal by Jacobs.

In the game, Settles rushed for 160 yards and tallied two touchdowns. He also threw for 207 yards. Herring finished the game with a Lynx-high 63 receiving yards on five catches including an 18-yard reception. Martinez' 27 was the longest of the night for Rhodes. He recorded 103 kickoff return yards to add to his 40 reception yards.

Defensively, Rhodes recorded five tackles for a loss of 13 yards. D'On Coofer recorded two of those to set Millsaps back six yards. Senior Cody Stockton led the team with five solo tackles and six total tackles.

After two weeks on the road, the Lynx return to Crain Field on October 6 to host Trinity (TX) at 1 p.m.
