DePauw Takes Advantage of Turnovers in 38-17 NCAC Win over Ohio Wesleyan

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw converted six Ohio Wesleyan fumbles into 24 points and took a 38-17 win over the visiting Battling Bishops on Old Gold Day/Family Weekend at Blackstock Stadium. The Tigers improved to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while the Battling Bishops slipped to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

The Tigers reached paydirt on the game's opening possession as quarterback Chase Andries scored on a 27-yard run which capped a 7-play, 65-yard series. Logan Greene blocked an Ohio Wesleyan punt on the Bishops' first possession and, after an exchange of punts and a 17-yard punt return by Andy Hunt, the Tigers took over on the Ohio Wesleyan 25. Three plays later, Andries connected with Will Harris for a 25-yard score to make it 14-0 with 4:58 left in the first.

Ohio Wesleyan got on the board with 9:57 left in the second as Gabe Philhower booted a 31-yard field goal to wrap up a 12-play, 54-yard series.

Later in the second, Nate Orrison sacked Jax Harville and Joe Zanca recovered the fumble at the Ohio Wesleyan 18. Three plays later, Noah Jones scored on a 6-yard run to push the lead to 21-3 with 4:16 remaining. 

Ohio Wesleyan responded as Harville completed a 33-yard pass play to Gabe Miller with 1:56 left in the half. The Battling Bishops stopped the Tigers on downs and got the ball back near midfield, but DePauw's Harry Bell intercepted Harville and returned it to the Ohio Wesleyan 37. Cam Haynes completed a pair of passes to Greene to the Ohio Wesleyan 11, but Mario DeJoy intercepted Haynes in the end zone.

Late in the third, the Tigers' Zach Williams intercepted Harville at the Ohio Wesleyan 26 and returned it to the 2 before Haynes tossed a 5-yard score to Hunt to make it 28-10. On the Bishops' next offensive play, Chandler Nicholson stepped in from of Harville's pass at the Ohio Wesleyan 36 and returned it all the way for his second career pick-six and his second interception of the game.

DePauw's Jake Tanner tacked on a career-long 43-yard field goal with 7:51 left before Harville wrapped up the scoring with 4:57 remaining with a 2-yard scoring pass to Mher Tcholakian.

The Tigers totaled 231 yards of offense including 146 through the air, while the Battling Bishops finished with 302 yards and just minus-five rushing yards. That marked the second straight game for DePauw's defene to hold an opponent to negative ground yardage.

Andries led DePauw with 27 rushing yards and completed 3 of 5 passes for 47 yards. Haynes completed 13 of 18 for 99 yards. Hunt caught a team-high six passes.

Trey Dixon paced Ohio Wesleyan with 23 rushing yards, while Harville completed 28 of 42 passes for 296 yards. Mher Tcholakian led with 10 catches for 109 yards.

Josh Pottebaum led DePauw with eight tackles, while Matt Crupi followed with seven. The DePauw defense recorded five sacks led by Orison's 2.5 and Keivan Rahimi's 1.5.

Cody Streit and Cameron Smith each had seven tackles for the Bishops, while five different players had one sack apiece.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, October 6, with a 1 p.m. NCAC game at Oberlin.
