Dutchmen upend No. 25 Springfield

More news about: Union

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Union College wide receiver Andre Ross Jr. did it again. For the third-straight week, the first year from Washington, D.C., broke 100 yards receiving, leading the Dutchmen to a dominant, 45-10, win at No. 25 Springfield on Saturday.

Even though Union's offense stole the show, the Dutchmen's defense was stellar as well, limiting a Springfield team, that entered the contest averaging over 400 yards on the ground, to just 126 total yards of offense.

  • Andre Ross Jr. had six catches for 178 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Will Bellamy completed 14 of 28 passes for 274 yards.
  • Ike Irabor rushed for 105 yards on 11 attempts, with one TD.
  • Springfield entered the game averaging 431.5 yards rushing (3rd in the NCAA).
  • Springfield was limited to 126 yards rushing and zero yards passing.
  • Colin Lama led Union with 12 total tackles.
  • Hunter Ordukhanyan had 10 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.

How It Happened
While Union had a six-touchdown outing, it was Springfield that go on the board first, using a 45-yard field goal and a four-yard run to hold a 10-0 lead through the first quarter.

However, after the first 15 minutes, it would be all Union College as the Dutchmen would go on to average one point per minute over the remaining 45 minutes of the game.

The Dutchmen got on the board after a fumble caused a turnover on downs for Springfield at the Union 29-yard line. It then only took two plays for the Dutchmen to drive 71 yards and get on the board. Will Bellamy completed a 58-yard pass to Ross Jr., before capping off the drive with a 13-yard pass to Griffin Beal for the TD.

On the next Springfield drive, Hunter Ordukhanyan forced a fumble that was recovered by Paul Chambers, setting up a 38-yard drive that ended with a 25-yard field goal by Marcos Rodriguez to tie the game up.

Later in the second half, Bellamy threw two passes, a 14-yarder to Ross Jr., and a 55-yarder to Chris Nicholas, before handing the ball off to first-year running back Ike Irabor, who capped off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown. Union would then carry the 17-10 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Bellamy would hit Ross Jr. for two touchdown passes, once with a two-yard pass and again with a 17-yard pass, to put Union up 31-10.

Ross Jr. then added his third touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter, completing a 48-yard catch to give Union the four-touchdown lead. It also marked his second-straight week with three touchdown catches.

The final score of the game would come off back-to-back runs by Derek Khnaizir, who punched in a one-yard touchdown after an eight-yard gain on the previous play.
