Union Bests Coast Guard, 28-10, to Improve to 2-0 for First Time Since 2005

More news about: Union

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Union College football team threw for 365 yards to defeat Coast Guard, 28-10, on the road Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen improve to 2-0 with the win and are undefeated through the first two games of the regular season since 2005.

Sophomore quarterback Will Bellamy was brilliant behind center once again, throwing for 365 yards and three touchdowns. His program single-game record 39 completions bested the previous mark of 35 set by Anthony Marotti in the NCAA Tournament against St. John Fisher College on November 18, 2006. Through two weeks, Bellamy already boasts two of the top-six single-game yardage marks in school history.

His main target was first year Andre Ross Jr., who had 16 catches for 215 yards, including all three touchdown passes. The 16 catches for Ross are the second-most in a game in program history, behind only the 19 hauled in by George LaPorte back on October 16, 1965 against RPI.

Union scored on its first two drives of the contest, scoring first with a 5-yard run by Ike Irabor, before a game-high 70-yard pass to Ross Jr., put the Dutchmen up 14-0 in the first quarter. Coast Guard got on the board with a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter, but Union went on to score its third TD with just five seconds remaining in the half.

Neither team scored in the third quarter and both teams traded touchdowns in the fourth as the Dutchmen clinched the 28-10 win. Union's defense was again stellar in the outing, limiting Coast Guards running game to just 65 yards and had three interceptions.

The Dutchmen remain on the road taking on Springfield next Saturday, Sept. 15, in Springfield, Mass. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
