Visiting Carnegie Mellon University scored twice in the last nine minutes of the second quarter to pull away from the University of Rochester enroute to a 31-7 Division III football victory at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Alex Cline threw touchdown passes to Karl Kumm (10 yards with 8:45 left in the period) and 23 yards to Alec Oshita (with 59 seconds left). It pushed CMU into a 21-7 lead at he break.
Carnegie's offense was led by Rory Hubbard. He rushed 20 times for 190 yards and scored one TD. The Tartans (1-0) rolled up 324 yards on the ground, 109 through the air. Five CMU players gained 19 or more yards rushing. Oshita caught three passes for 64 yards. Kumm hauled in three passes for 25 yards. Hubbard and Willie Richter had four catches apiece, both short distances.
For Rochester (0-2), quarterback Josh Brown ran for 51 yards on eight carries (he was sacked twice) and one TD. Damon Yargeau led the Yellowjackets with 84 rushing yards on 12 ties. UR ran for 170 and threw for another 95. Brown hit 13 of 26 passes with one pick. He scored on a 29-yard run early in the second quarter that evened the score at 7-7. Late in the game, he had a 34-yard scoring pass to Noah Shinaman disallowed due to a holding call.
CMU kicker Brandon Nguyen made four PATs and a 38-yard field goal (in the final quarter). Rochester kicker Dawson Klinger made his one PAT. He was wide-right on a 42-yard field goal try with 4:15 left in the second period. It had the distance, just drifted away.
Noah Barnard intercepted Cline on the first series of the game, but the Yellowjackets couldn't move. Later in the quarter, J.D. Dayhuff drove the Tartans inside the Rochester 8. Adam Baghi intercepted it at the goalline and returned it 31 yards, but UR went three-and-out.
